I just got a new Dell Inspiron 1420 (and I've been having a hell of a time trying to get either the wired or wireless networking to work, but that's another issue...) and I installed Gentoo, but I get a kernel panic when I boot.
Code: | VFS: Cannot open root device "sda7" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
0300 4194302 hda driver: ide-cdrom
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) |
I assume this means that I'm missing some kind of support for SCSI block devices, although I selected everything I think I need. I can post the .config if it's needed.
I have a 160 GB hard drive divided as follows:
/dev/sda1 - some random 2.5 GB partition, perhaps a Dell backup?
/dev/sda2 - a 10 GB partition... I know this one is a Dell backup
/dev/sda3 - Vista
/dev/sda4 - Extended partition
/dev/sda5 - Dell Media Direct thing
/dev/sda6 - ext2 boot partition (/boot)
/dev/sda7 - ext3 root partition (/)
I've never had this problem before because this is the first time I've used SCSI and Linux before.

I don't think it's the issue of SCSI. You don't probably have proper SATA driver enabled in your kernel. Check your hardware using 'lspci' and find out what's your controller type. Enable it in your kernel and recompile it. |

I love you man I've been all excited about this laptop and it seems like everything has gone wrong until now (I've spent the past three days trying to get the networking to work under several distros). Problem solved. |

I'm trying to manually install gentoo on my HP Pavillion and I am getting a similar error upon reboot:
Code: | VFS: Cannot open root device "803" or unknown-block(8,3)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
0300 4194302 hda driver: ide-cdrom
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,3) |
I've tried both grub and lilo with the same results. My fstab is right out of the handbook:
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 noauto,noatime 1 2
/dev/sda3 / ext3 noatime 0 1
/dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0
I belive I have the proper driverd loaded. Do the boot loaders require hda* in /dev? That is the only option I haven't tried. |

Given what you've pasted you don't have the correct sata driver loaded. What's the output of lspci? (emerge pciutils if it's not installed.)
Also, you should start a new thread, most would ignore posts in a solved thread. |
