|
|
I'm having a problem with KDM sessions. Earlier, I created a couple of sessions and put them into /etc/X11/Sessions. And they showed up in the KDM window beautifully, and I could startup in them without any trouble. Then a few days later, I went into the KDE Control Center - System Administration - Login Manager, and choose a new GUI style for KDM. I saved the configuration, but now when I startup, KDM dosn't show the sessions in /etc/X11/Sessions, instead it has only kde, default, and failsafe (the kde session BTW does not start kde). Selecting any of them puts you at a command prompt in x, from where you have to enter 'startkde' to start KDE. This is annoying, is there any way I can get KDM acknowledge the sessions in /etc/X11/Sessions again. I'm almost ready to officially give up redhat for good , but fixing this would make me even more sure of it. Thanks all.

Yes, they are all owned by root, and have red and execute permission for all users. I've been looking into this alot over the past few days, but nothing is working. |

In the KDM admin module of the control center, klick on the "Sessions" tab. There, type the name of your new session in the field "New Type".
Be careful that it exactly matches the filename in /etc/X11/Sessions! |

OK, I went to the session tab in the admin module of the control center, and put the names of my new sessions in the fiels new type. Now when I boot up, KDM shows the correct sessions, but selecting them does not produce the correct results, they just start me in a command prompt within X. I made sure that the session names are exactly like they are in /etc/X11/Sessions. And I have not changed the session scripts, which were working before.
Any other ideas? |

Sorry, for me it always worked the way it should when using the way described above.
Maybe you can find something in /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/kdmrc |

I'll post mine:

the line of particular interest is:
Code: |

|
which is correct, those are my four sessions. But for some reason kdm doesn't look for these sessions in /etc/X11/Sessions anymore. I wish I knew where it was looking, and where the code to put it back in the right place was.

I have exactly the same problem. And no clue what to do. I have checked the sae configuration files as you have and they seem to be OK.
It is the second time it happens to me. The first time I re-installed Gentoo. But it takes time! One circumstance that is the same in both my cases is that I got disk full just before the odd behaviour started with kdm. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the problem though.
Anyones help on this topic would be really good. _________________ /Phil |

Well, I'm not giving up on this, though I'm hoping it will be fixed with the next release of whatever package is causing this. This is clearly a bug, I'm going to check and see if its in Gentoos bugzilla, try to track down which file exactly is causing this (chooser.sh maybe?), and report it...

Ie never been able to completely figure it out, I think it has something to do with this entry in kdmrc
Setup=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0
If you look in there, that the script that writes the session entries into kdmrc.
Ie just never been able to work out when it get's called, and how it ties into the kcontrol settings.
Hopefully others can fill the picture in |

I have the same problems here. I did some hacks in all scripts that came in my mind, but i never got a satisfying result. I think the problem is somewhere with kdm an the script it calls after pressing the login button. In kdm doc it says the script is called Xsession but i changed all instances of this script without any difference. Is there another script which is called by kdm? |

i've got the exact same damn annoying problem. i can do what i want, i have tried thousand things, nothing works. i always get this xterm where i have to enter startkde. i've even re-emerged kde, but it didn't work. can perhaps someone with a clean installation post his kdmrc, and /etc/X11/Sessions? i'll also search the kde bug database if there's something mentioned about this, i'll post it here if i find something. |

Maybe some of the devs can take a look at it? _________________ There are 10 types of people,
