When reading from a hard disk drive, can the Linux kernal read without retries? This option would be useful in some instances, such as first pass when recovering data from a failing hard drive using dd_rescue, or when scanning for bad blocks using badblocks. Yet programs such as dd_rescue and badblocks do not offer any such options, they send all read commands to the IDE drive as 'read sectors with retry' (0x20). The command 'read sectors without retry' is understood by an IDE drive, why are Linux programs not using it? |

At the moment I'm not a Gentoo user, just stopped by for some conversation. I've read the man page for hdparm but saw nothing about any read-no-retry mode. Is there URL where I can read aforementioned help files? |
