I'm writing this in links, as I can't get my X environment to work!

I've just done an upgrade to kde-3.5.7 (also upgraded gnome to 2.18) - after finally ironing out the problems I obtained using revdep-rebuild, I can get kdm to start. When I type in my username and password and choose my session type, instead of loading kde, kdm just goes back to itself! I also tried selecting Gnome from the Session type, but I got the same result.

I've set the XSESSION variable in /etc/rc.conf to load kde-3.5.7, cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't display any errors (EE). I don't think dmesg is relevant but I looked at that too, no problems there either. Am I missing something really obvious or is there something wrong?

Anyone help?

Check /var/log/kdm.log

Checked it - again, no EEs, just some Synaptics DeviceOn/Device/Off calls etc, something about FreeFontPath: FPE [..] refcount is 2 should be 1; fixing.

Don't know if this is relevant: AUDIT: [date] 12750 X: client 2 rejected from local host (uid 1000).

No idea what that means but something's been rejected!

Yeah, I think that's definitely relevant. Your user account has uid 1000 (or it should). Did you alter the hostname or anything like that? You could also try renaming ~/.Xauthority and then attempt to login again.

I'm not sure how to check my userid on the commandline...

Thought I'd also make it clear that I'm running kdm with the script /etc/init.d/xdm start.

I tried renaming .Xauthority in my user directory to .Xauthority_old, but that didn't help.

Basically all that happens is the screen goes black for a moment and then kdm appears again... Any ideas what else I could try? I'm a little out of my depth at this point...

Appreciate your help didymos!

Code:

id -u

That shouldn't matter, as far as I know. Alright, try renaming the file ~/.ICEauthority, which you should have.

Tried to delete both ~/.ICEauthority and ~/.Xauthority, still getting same results! id -u identifies my root at 0 and my user as 1000, so I guess that's right...

Do you know what the AUDIT line actually means? Or what's causing the problem?

Everything's built properly as revdep_rebuild gives me no errors... really didn't think I'd have this many problems upgrading to 3.5.7 - spent some time reading the forums as well before taking on the challenge!

Is it possible the problem's related to disk space? Just realised I have very little left...

As I'm running out of ideas on what to delete, I was wondering if it's possible to delete the source files for programs downloaded by portage without breaking anything?

Problem solved - it definitely was disk space.

Really? Huh, I'll have to remember that. I guess it couldn't create the sockets and whatnot it needed.
