Sound not working with newer kernels

I've got a Soundblaster 16 PCI card in my computer (Ensoniq 5880 chip, uses the ens1371 driver), and it doesn't work with any kernel newer than 2.6.17. Alsaconf detects the card and installs the correct module, but alsamixer only contains a few controls (sliders for "3D Control - Center" and "3D Control - Depth"; switches for "3D Control - Switch", "Line In->Rear Out", "Mic Boost", "Mic Select", "IEC958", "IEC958 1", "Mono Output Select", and "External Amplifier"), and nothing produces sound.

Any ideas?

Update: It's not just newer kernels. Rebooting from 2.6.22-r2 to 2.6.17 broke sound under 2.6.17 the same way, but running alsaconf fixed it. Running alsaconf does not fix newer kernels.
