The system locks up when I am trying to copy a file from a mounted NFS share to a local directory. CTRL-C will not abort the copy command, even if intr is set as a mount option. In addition, the shutdown sequence hangs because it complains that it can't unmount the network file systems. I can succesfully mount remote NFS shares. I can successfully traverse directories without a problem. The problem is when I go to copy a file from a mounted NFS share to a local directory. Note that these exported shares are also exported to other machines, and they work fine on those other machines. These other machines are also running Gentoo Linux.

I also can export from the local system, and mount and use these shares from remote machines without a problem, including copying files. The problem is limited to using this system as a client.

System Config
-------------

Hardware: IBM Thinkpad 600E (Client machine)
Distrib : Gentoo Linux 1.4 rc 4
Portmap : 5b-r6 (?) - Recent.
NFS : 1.0.3
Mount : 2.11y

Kernel Modules / Options
------------------------

NFS file system support
Provide NFSv3 client support
NFS server support
Provide NFSv3 server support

Other information
-----------------

Remote systems housing exported shares:

macquarie:
----------

/mnt/public antarctica(rw,no_root_squash,sync) amundsen(rw,no_root_squash,sync) shackleton(rw,no_root_squash,sync)

antarctica:
-----------

/mnt/priv amundsen(rw,sync) shackleton(rw,sync)

Local (client) system having the problem has hostname shackleton

Portmap is running
nfsd is running
rpc.mountd is running

syslog and messages don't have anything useful.

Yes, but unfortunately it was one of those situations where I don't know what I did. I compiled a fresh kernel. Might have missed a module, or had a module which was causing problems. I have it working now but unfortunately dont have the old config to compare.

Did you have to use any special mount options. I remember reading somewhere about that.

No. Eventually I wound up just using defaults, and it worked perfectly. I did try just about everything under the sun.

I just had something similar: Copying large files to the NFS volume stopped after about 80MB. The copy process was in Status D, so not even a clean shutdown was possible. When doing a /etc/init.d/nfs restart on the server the copy went on for another 80MB and stopped again.
The crazy thing was: Other machines had no problems accessing the same share, and the same box had no problems with other shares from the same server :?

Searching here and on google I found a lot of tips, but nothing that helped.
I tried sync/async, nfs v2 and 3, a bunch of mount options, built new kernels on client and server...
The only thing that helped was decreasing rsize and wsize to 2048, but this resulted in a very poor performance.

So finally - just before going crazy - I remerged util-linux nfs-utils and portmap on client and server - and it works again ?!?
