Well, don't know what the new knoppix does look like, but menu transparency is no prob: Just start
kcontrol, go to
Appearance and Themes, then
Style and on the right side
Effects There is an option called
Menu translucency type, where you of course can set the type of translucency you want (If available I would choose XRender) and below you can ste the opacity
