Just curious: anyone know what the Gentoo plans are for X.org 7.3 (out today) and Xserver 1.4? |

Where'd you here that xorg-server 1.4 was released?
The latest I can find on the mirrors is 1.3.99. _________________ "You have to invite me in" |

So it should be released any minute.
How long does it usually take for the x.org-servers to make its way into portage? _________________ How many Microsoft Programmers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: It cannot be done. You will need to upgrade your house. |

Um, you actually believe in release schedule dates? Do you believe in Santa Claus as well?
Anyway, xorg-server-1.4 is in alpha, and xorg-x11-7.3 probably won't be out for another two months or so. |

You're telling me Santa doesn't exist ?
Anyway, I did read it on phoronix too. _________________ How many Microsoft Programmers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: It cannot be done. You will need to upgrade your house. |

You've piqued my interest, so looking around I found the following release tracker for 7.3.
Looks like we may have quite a wait.
As for how long it'll be between the final release and it's addition to portage, my guess would be a couple of days if there aren't any apparent issues, although the fact that 1.3.99 was never added doesn't look promising.
I was trying to find the release dates of the previous version, but the xorg "wiki" is frustrating as hell, if you find that information you could figure out how long it usually takes by comparing the release date to the dates in the xorg-server Changelog. _________________ "You have to invite me in" |

Yep.
Normally an ABI bump only means you have to re-compile (not to re-code) so it shouldn't take too long.
Remember xorg-server 1.1.x (Xorg 7.1) which was also subject of an ABI change in video drivers? It took almost half a year before Nvidia released new binary drivers. But after waiting patiently they released drivers with better compositing support. Shortly after that, they implemented TFP into their drivers. Fortunately it was clear that they had not been sitting on their lazy asses all the time
Personally I can live with Xorg 7.2 for now. I'm waiting for proper output hotplugging (aka RANDR 1.2) in the NVIDIA drivers rather than input hotplugging (aka server 1.4) . _________________ Alle dingen moeten onzin zijn. |

Today's OSnews reports: Quote: | "Scheduled for release tomorrow is X.Org 7.3. Among the new features for X.Org 7.3 include the Xorg server 1.4, an application for adjusting a display's backlight, updated display drivers, and support for font catalog directories. Version 1.4 of the X.Org server contains such features as RandR 1.2 support, input hot-plugging, KDrive enhancements, Solaris DTrace support, and EXA improvements. In this article today, we will briefly go over some of the changes found in X.Org 7.3 and we will follow up with some benchmarks in early September." |

Eric Anholt, the X.Org 7.3 release manager, had pushed the X.Org 7.3 release back by at least a week due to show-stopping bugs. Eric has set the new X.Org 7.3 release date for September 5th. At present there are about seven bugs holding up this release. Additional information can be found on the X.Org mailing list. |

I saw a blog post stating that xorg x11 7.3 was going out today, so I assume the x11 herd will be busy packaging over the next few days.
To confirm, I just checked the Release Schedule on the X wiki, which has indeed been updated to September 5th release: http://www.x.org/wiki/ReleaseSchedule _________________ If God were a pickle, I'd still say "no pickle on my burger".

XORG 7.3 has been released (see the website www.x.org). Anyone know when it'll make its way into portage? _________________ Richard

No, scratch that, it just loaded, but it's crawling.
Thay've put up the tarball for xorg-server 1.4 here though.

Personally I'm actually shocked there hasn't been any zero-day bump requests filed on bugzilla yet,
I wanted to see the devs scream at someone.

I'm holding my breath waiting for this to appear in portage. Maybe I'll finally be able to use accelerated video again. |
