I'm also not sure why it doesn't pick up the mtp flag. What I would do is either add mtp to the USE flags in /etc/make.conf and then run emerge --newuse -uDav world or try adding mtp to /etc/portage/package.use. Your really not supposed to supply USE= on the command line. Check out this resource for general info about use flags: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=2

I tried adding the mtp flag to package.use but again it did not pick the flag. Is something wrong with the ebuild that I am using. I am posting it here:

Something is failing during the config Makefile generation and it is not reporting an error. I would try to emerge libmtp again. I have media-libs/libmtp-0.2.0 installed for my setup that works with an iRiver T30. Also try completely removing the working directory for the amarok install(typically /usr/portage/tmp --- i think, whatever PORTAGE_TMPDIR is set to in /etc/make.conf). Maybe there are some left over files and its messing up your install.
