Has anyone tried the new Ximian Desktop as of late? A new version was just released, but I cannot download it due to the Ximian site timing out every time I try to visit it. I heard about some problems in another thread about the previous version of Ximian Desktop not working with Gentoo. Has anyone tried the new version yet?

Ximian does not support Gentoo as a platform, and the release is next week. The main problem with gettingthis to work on Gentoo would be coding all the sysadmin apps to work with Gentoo's way of doing it.

Other than that it should be a simple question of getting the source rpms if any are available.

GNOME is GPL/LGPL. They have to release the modified code.

ftp://ftp.ximian.com/pub/ximian-gnome/debian-potato-i386/source/
? is that source for it?
maybe we should start a petition to release a gentoo version of ximian, as it seems to be more used than some of the distros they support now, and its popularity doesnt seem to be dropping

Yes there seems to be source there for each of the various distros.

I'm sure some of the sources can be adapted to Gentoo. Not sure about official policy on it. foser? anyone?

I would love to see a gentoo version of XD2. I read someplace that XD2 doesn't do much with the system tools actually and instead uses the configuration tools that come with the distro. Anyone else know about this?

Also, I saw that the Ximian OpenOffice version is in XD2, what about just a port for that? That would be really nice!

Until there is some new developments, the older "Ximian Desktop" threads are still relevant.
