i'm using ati-drivers for my ati x1700 chipset and for the most part they seem to perform. fglrxinfo says my ati drivers are being used, glxgears runs at a very high frame rate, but some rendering still seems to rely entirely on cpu. so i looked at my /var/log/Xorg.0.log and it shows:

(EE) AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed (/usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

i searched on google for a good long time these were the solutions i've found:
i updated to the latest masked version of ati-drivers (8.40.4) but the error still happens. i can stop the error from happening by adding this to my xorg.conf:

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

but this just stops it AIGLX from trying and failing to load, it doesn't actually improve anything. also i am using xorg 7.1.1.0 (ati-drivers-8.40.4 needs a minimum of xorg 7.1.0 so i think i am good there).

my question is, would updating my xorg (latest unmasked is 7.1.2) possibly get AIGLX to work, or would that not do anything? i don't want to go through 98723498237 hours of compiling and reconfiguring if it's not going to help.

ati-drivers dont support AIGLX, so just disable it. with an ati x1700 you must stick to ati-drivers & Xgl since the free driver has no 3d support for your chip yet (avivo driver for these chips is still in early stage)
