I can not open terminals as a user in evilwm

I don't get it?!?!?!
No problems when I start X as root, system runs fine, but when I log in as a normal user, I can not open a terminal or any programs in evilwm.
My .xinitrc file is the exact same in both root and my user account. Am I missing something???? The only thing I can do in evilwm as a normal user is stop X.
