Well, there it goes, the sound module isn't loaded as a module but directly built-in by the kernel... well I'd like to know what _STEPS_ I have to follow in order to make 4 speakers sound.
I know lots of you have done it, but I haven't summerged into this before, so I wish you could reply me with a 'list' of steps to be done... from the packages to be emerged, configuration and so on... |

I assume that by sound "built into the kernel" you're saying that you don't have a soundcore.o module. I don't know if that's important or not, but I have it as a module (I bvelieve it doesn't matter, anyway). And that's the only sound related module I have in my kernel. As for alsa, I've just followed the alsa guide on the gentoo website, and it works ok.
You could try checking you're mixer settings, to see if your rear channels are unmuted.
Another thing is to play a 5.1 DVD in xine (after checking the surround options in xine, as per the xine FAQ)
It should work pretty effortlessly...
good luck!

WOW! Now I understand! I have to recompile kernel and remove all other module drivers... just let the module sndcore.o
This explains my failure in previous attempts of alsa configuration. Good... recompiling the kernel and so... you'll have news from me soon!!! |

OK I have a problem... not everything went perfect... the system does not load the mixer settings... where does it save such file so I can modify it manually?
It's really fatigating that each I start the system I have to enter alsamixer and reconfigure the settings because it doesn't save them! |
