gentoo kernel problems

hi, i built the gentoo-2.4.19-r5 kernel from the 1.2 stage3 image.
but my modem doesnt work with it.
its just a standard modem over the serial port.
so i built a 2.4.18 with xfs patch and that works fine so does anyone know what part of 2.4.19 could be causing this.

i used the same options in the kernel config ( except where the menu is different )
