X locks with mplayer/xine/tvtime

Ok, I know there is a X Locks sticky, but there were a hell of a lot of posts to go through and they seem to be more related to random locks... Let me know if I should have posted there though

I'm trying to test my new tuner card (Pinnacle 310i [Hybrid Pro PCI]) using mplayer/xine/tvtime but they all crash Xorg/twm immediately after being launched. Ctrl+c from the console that I run startx or trying to kill xinit/startx/twm doesn't bring it down, but kill -9 `pidof twm` ends the session... I checked through /var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.log but neither of them (seem to) have any record of the lock or what caused it

Pretty much I'm just not sure where the problem is - Xorg, mplayer/tvtime/xine or twm?

I've never used gentoo before trying to put this media PC together so I've probably got something very wrong - but I've got no idea what/where. MythTV works fine (plays music/movies/analogue tv) but I didn't want to have the pain of going through mythtv-setup several times while configuring the tuner card (digital tuning is being a bit of a problem, might make another post about that soon if I can get this sorted out) - that and I'm interested to know why it's locking
