Ive been having a problem with my nvidia drivers for the past couple of weeks... and it's really starting to get to me.

I cannot get nvidia's drivers to work. On a previous installation a few months ago, they worked fine. However, after I switched to the gaming-sources and now the ck-sources, Ive yet to get them to work.

I've enabled MTTR in my kernel, and nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx emerge fine. However, once I startx, the screen turns black, and I have to reboot. I've tried different AGP settings, with no luck... and the default worked before on my old isntallation.

If someone could take a sec or two to help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. :(

Here's my X log:

Im also experiencing the lock up,

Im using the gentoo kernel (r5) , with the latest drivers available by emerge.

If i change the driver from nv to nvidia it freezes leaving me no choice but to press reset. When i change it back the problem goes away.

I'm using a GF3Ti200 from pny, its worked before when using vanilla-source, in fact i generlly got more fps in linux then windows with it.

I might try using a vanilla-sources kernel and see if it goes away... on one condition: would changing to that kernel require me to re-compile all the software ive already compiled.

You shouldnt have to recompile anything. But, hmm, just in case you forget... you'll have to re-emerge nvidia-kernel.

If it helps any, I could not get my GF4 Ti4400 to load in X properly using the nvidia-driver ebuild (which is version 4349). It works beautifully however, using the nvidia drivers downloaded from www.nvidia.com, version 4363 (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run). I just have to recompile the nvidia driver every time I recompile the kernel, using:
Code:
# nvidia-installer -s --update -f

Try that, and see if it solves your lockup problem. It fixed mine.

After weeks of trying, I got things working..

First, to get my X to start, I simply needed to turn off the device detection checks that would occur when starting X. (Instructions Here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=58576)

Then.. X would start, however, opengl wouldnt work. There were problems with the nvidia-glx that I emerged. I unmerged them, and got the drivers from http://www.nvidia.com.

After that, things began to work smoothly!
Thanks for the help people..
