Good luck and all that with this project. It's great to see passionate developers contribute to open source projects.

Keep in mind that Gentoo isn't the only open source project you can contribute to. In this situation the best option for the free software community would be for all of this effort to go into helping Ximian's patches be integrated upstream into Gnome, OO, etc. This benefits all the users of these projects and not just Gentoo-ers.

Nothing is ever set in stone and a talented group of hackers could dramatically decrease the time until these patches are accepted and their respective projects are released.

The best part about all of this is everyone is free to work on whatever scratches their particular itch. I'm sure achieving you're current goals will will be greatly appreciated by the Gentoo community.

I've read this entire thread and I can appreciate the copywrite issues involved, but XD2 is open source with packages sitting on the Ximian ftp site for anyone to use. What exactly would be the harm in downloading the full XD2 RPM's for say, Red Hat, and making a script/ebuild that ran them through rpm2tgz and extracted it to the proper place? In fact, I read something writen up for Slackware users telling them to do just that if they wanted it along with an explaination as to why Slack wasn't supported. If the Ximian installer is required because of copywrite rules, why can I download the entire thing off a public ftp?

While I understand and admire the goals of this project, I think a "quick fix" could be implemented fairly quickly. Granted you loose the customized aspect of Gentoo since you'd basically just be using converted RPM's, but you'd certainly have a functional XD2 desktop along with all the Ximian Gnome inprovements.

Just an idea. Hell, I might do it anyways just for myself.

The only thing from the installer we'd need to mimic is the Bitstream Vera fonts License display. But that should be done anyway in the bitstream ebuild we have.

It's being worked on heavily, but the development is being done in a private CVS. Right now the only major things left are printing (which I'm trying to sort out at this very moment) and around a couple dozen packages with minor changes.
Join #g-xd2 on freenode if you're interested in helping out. (We're not ready for testers yet!)

I just looked over them, and they just seem to be the original package (unpatched), and the patch files (for the most part). It would probably be best to ignore the src.rpms and just download from current portage servers/their original websites/patches.ximian.com

kerrick:
We were waiting on the srpms for packages where Ximinan is the primary maintainer.
Specifically: (most of) the cool printing stuff, ximian-artwork, and probably a couple other things that have slipped my mind.

Status update:
Printing is done. Ximian OOo is the next thing to tackle, we may just decide to include an ebuild that installs the binary version of it from the RH9 rpms. Beyond that it's just a an assortment of minor packages, monkey-squashing, and bug-squashing.

There's a build-from-source ebuild out there that works? If you could be so kind as to point us to the exact ebuild, (I don't have time to try every one listed in the X-OOo thread) I'd appreaciate it.

If you can give us ebuilds for libgnomeprint(ui) we'd love it. Ximian is just using 2.3.x cvs snapshots for those which we have to unpack from their srpms.

I for the life of me can't remeber who made it-and this file uses rpm2tgz to convert the gnome printing librarires(which may be in binary form-don't remember)

so if the author of this work of art sees this-please don't shoot me- hats off to he/she who did the work....

# IMPORTANT:  This is extremely alpha!!!

# Notes:
#
#   This will take a HELL of a long time to compile, be warned.
#   According to openoffice.org, it takes approximately 12 hours on a

#
#   It takes about 6 hours on my P4 1.8 with 512mb memory, and the
#   build only needs about 2.1GB of disk space - Azarah.
#
#   You will also need a bucketload of diskspace ... in the order of
#   4-5 gb free to store all the compiled files and installation

Status Update:
I've just rolled the first pre-release tarball.

DO NOT FILE ANY BUGS RELATED TO THESE EBUILDS ON THE GENTOO.ORG BUGZILLA!
THIS IS PRE-RELEASE, DO NOT EXPECT IT TO WORK!

Installation instructions:

1. Download the tarball
2. Unpack it to your ${PORTDIR_OVERLAY}
3. Add "xd2gen2" to your USE setting in make.conf
4. ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge (-pv) gnome
4.a. For the packages that portage complains about being masked, remove the offending lines from your package.mask (or add them to your package.unmask.)

There is another step that you must complete before you will be able to successfully install XD2GEN2, but you will discover that when you resolve all the p.mask issues. It is a check to ensure that people RTFM.

If you happen to notice the Ximian(tm) logo anywhere, please report it; it is a bug.

Please report any issues (after checking that they aren't already reported) that you experience with the ebuilds themselves as bugs on http://bugs.breakmygentoo.net/ in the "Gnome Software" product and the "XD2" component.
DO NOT FILE ANY BUGS RELATED TO THESE EBUILDS ON THE GENTOO.ORG BUGZILLA!

For XD2GEN2 developers:
This is all checked into the cvs (freeze is over).
Please don't revision bump stuff without an extremely good reason (run-time crashes fx), if you do, be sure to update all other ebuilds (dont revsion bump them) that =depend on it.
Let's wait at least until tuesday before rolling another tarball, to collect and fix as many issues as possible before we do.

For Gentoo developers:
All our ebuilds have -r20 (or higher) to make them stand out.
Please help get gentoo.org bugs 23507, 23559, 23566 and 23567 knocked off asap (simple version bumps).

Nice job!
Just finished installing this. There were some minor issues that were fairly easy to get around, and it's running well so far.

*soaking it in*

could you post the issues to the bugs.breakmygentoo.org bugzilla and assign it to me (robert@lowbud.com / robert@gentoo.se)
and i'll have a look at it when i get back from the cottage!

cheers.

oh and to others, you really want to clean out all of your old gnome-base and gnome-extra apps+libs and do a clean install, delete the ~/.gnome2* so you get a fresh "xd2g2"

could you post the issues to the bugs.breakmygentoo.org bugzilla and assign it to me (robert@lowbud.com / robert@gentoo.se)
and i'll have a look at it when i get back from the cottage!

Sure thing - I posted them (bug #83). I wasn't able to assign it to you, as neither e-mail address for you was accepted by Bugzilla.

Thanks!

Ok, having a little bit of a problem here.

Code:
>>> Unpacking gthumb-2.1.1.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/gthumb-2.1.1-r30/work
xd2gen2

* Cannot find #EPATCH_SOURCE! Value for $EPATCH_SOURCE is:
*
* /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/gthumb/files/gthumb-ximian-menus.patch

Seems odd.. so I did this

Code:
bunzip2 xd2gen2-overlay-beta1.tar.bz2
tar -tf xd2gen2-overlay-beta1.tar | grep gthumb

./media-gfx/gthumb
./media-gfx/gthumb/files
./media-gfx/gthumb/files/digest-gthumb-2.1.1-r30
./media-gfx/gthumb/gthumb-2.1.1-r30.ebuild
./media-gfx/gthumb/Manifest

The patch its looking for doesn't seem to be in the tarball.

Edit: Ok, I just shot over to ximian.com and downloaded the gthumb patch and stuck it where it was supposed to be. Seemed to compile fine, so just a heads up about the missing patch.

Whew! Only 49 more packages left to install!
