|
|
Hi,
working with vmware-server and vmware-server-console I noticed that when I close the GUI, the VM is turned off, too. With vmware-workstation this behaviour is ok, but why does the server switches off VMs only because the GUI exits?
I couldn't find any settings to change that.
I know how to do it in the windows version of vmware-server but these options aren't in the linux one... _________________ Kernel panic: I have no root and I want to scream |

That's really weird. Of course it should not shut down or switch of any VMs and I'm quite sure that there is no configuration setting for that.
Are you 100% sure that the command
returns a shorter list of running VMs after you have closed the Vmware server console? |

I have two machines with vmware-server here. Can't test it on the one I had this issue but just tried it with the other - started a VM, closed the console, vmrun list still shows me the VM. Restarted the console which shows me nothing but a blank screen for the running VM. I can't switch into the VM, the only thing left is to stop the VM...
Will test it with the other machine later. _________________ Kernel panic: I have no root and I want to scream |

A blank screen? Just black?
I'm sorry if this is too basic, but could it be that this is just the console blanking of the running VM's system?
Have you tried clicking inside the black area and then press the ctrl-key of your keyboard? |

The VM isn't reacting any more. Can't activate it by clicking or pressing ctrl+g - the hdd symbol blinks now and then, so the machine is still running but I can't use it over the gui. _________________ Kernel panic: I have no root and I want to scream |

A screenshot of a blank screen? Sure, why not ;)
-> http://thiem-net.de/misc/pics/vm.jpg
Code: |
# vmrun list
Total running VMs: 1
/mnt/exchange/vm/WinXP/WinXP.vmx

Just got this message when I re-open the console again
Code: |
Unable to connect to the MKS: You need execute access in order to connect with the VMware Server Console. Access denied for config file: /mnt/exchange/vm/WinXP/WinXP.vmx.
|
Permissions on that file

as well as on the directories where this is placed. _________________ Kernel panic: I have no root and I want to scream |

Weird. The error can usually be fixed by correcting the permissions of the vmx file but in your case they seem to be correct.
What kind of file system is /mnt/exchange? |

Do you login as root via the Vmware server console or do you use a different user?
Have to set "this machine is private" at the VMs' settings? |

vmware server and console are started as root and the machine isn't private. _________________ Kernel panic: I have no root and I want to scream |

No problem
I'll try to lock the problem down. _________________ Kernel panic: I have no root and I want to scream |
