resource.dir and resource.pag after apache-2.2 update

Hello All

I'm seeing these 0 length files be created in /tmp

-rw-r----- 1 apache apache 0 Sep 21 06:55 resource.dir
-rw-r----- 1 apache apache 0 Sep 21 06:55 resource.pag

I've deleted these, and they seem to return (not after apache restart). Just curious what the deal was with these.
My current version of apache is: apache-2.2.6
