I don't know how to diagnose this problem which occurred very recently with some updates I made, I guess. I do know that KDE and xfce work fine, and I do know that it's something not entirely related to configuration (I even tried moving my home folder and creating an empty one to make sure of this, and had the same problem).
Is there any log file or something I can go into when gnome is starting up that might give me an idea of where it is getting stuck?
Here is what happens: I type my username/password, then gnome starts and a splash is displayed. The desktop background appears, and occasionally it'll even start fusion icon. However, I don't get a panel and everything isn't working right.
I recently updated to xorg-server-1.4 with the new nvidia drivers. Again this seems to work fine in kde/xfce, so I don't think that's the issue. I have already revdep-rebuild with no problems so I don't think it's anything that is a broken library, so I'm at a bit of a loss. |

Try create new user and start gnome with him to see will it work or not.
I had problem like yours after update gnome to 2.18. |

Looking further into it I had more problems than I thought at first. I downgraded xorg-server to 1.3 from 1.4 and it works again. I guess the nvidia driver isn't ready for that yet even though it seemed to work "kind of" fine. |

Same here: can't login with a user.
I created a new user, with which I'm able to login but not to logout. Logout just hangs gnome-panel and the logout screen...
Should I downgrade xorg-server to 1.3 too? _________________ Windoze : Plug and Pay... |

Try '#rc-update add esound default'. It may hangup due to logoff sound... |
