Is anyone actually having any kind of stability from reiser4? For the third time (out of 3 tries) in building a system with root on reiser4, it's self-destructed after a few days (usually the first hard crash while trying to get things configured just right). Root FS becomes unmountable with errors flying in all directions. Boot LiveCD, run fsck.reiser4, and have about 50% of the files zeroed. I don't think filesystems are supposed to work this way.

I've been using reiser3 since its inception, and while it had problems in the beginning, it was never even close to this bad. And this is supposedly a stable "1.0" release.

Sorry for the rant. I'm just wondering what kind of experiences others are having with this filesystem.

I have used it since it came out on Gentoo (few months now) without any problems.

Me too, i also don't have any problems with reiser4 anymore. I have 4 partitions with reiser4(makes sense 4 and 4), / , /tmp, /mnt/.ccache and another which is empty, which i may turn into /home.

Make sure you use a kernel with a "stable" reiser4 patch, nitro sources are good, also cko(based on ck), which you can find when searching for Kolivas' Kernel patchset. Also the newest libaal and reiser4progs are a must , maybe compile them with less "aggressive" CFLAGS, maybe that led to the errors.

I recently did rebuild my system, using an newer profile(x86/2004.3), on a reiser4 partition. No problem with the filesystem. Issues might arise with usng nfs, as mentioned in other threads.

For /boot one should use ext2 or reiserfs.

Finally, reiser4 is still quite experimental, so it might have conflicts with other kernel code, which only show up on certain hardware.

I haven't had any problems either with Reiser4, and I've been using it since it was officially released also. Rumor on the street is, if you use a kernel that was patched wrong with the reiser4 patch you'll get disk corruption and what not. There are only a few kernels I trust: ck-sources, cko-sources, mm-sources and love-sources.

I can't say I've had any problems with reiser4 this time around. About 6 months ago, I had a few issues, all of which fsck.reiser4 fixed without killing my data.

This time, I've had numerous hardlocks while trying to get the experimental r300 drivers working, and fsck.reiser4 reports no corruption. Although, I have been using sysrq to sync & unmount before I reboot, so that could have something to do it.

Reiser4 has been pretty good here, too. My reiser4-enabled kernels include nitro-sources, vivid-sources (which deserves to be better known, btw) and gentoo-dev-sources which I patch myself for reiser4. They all work fine here. lxnay has a very good reiser4-enabled livecd which can be used for an installation from scratch, and I noticed that the latest Kanotix, which is a full linux livecd like Knoppix, has reiser4 support. So you could use Kanotix to do a Knoppix-style reiser4 install from bootstrap without losing use of the computer.

Thank you lxnay! His rescue CD alone has been a life saver.

I just wanted to add that I have been having problems that I thought were related to Reiser4 when it might actually be one of the schedulers.

I posted here and basically have eliminated mounted reiser4 partitions as being "the cause." However, I have NOT rebuilt the kernel without Reiser4 compiled in. I will probably try first just compiling it a as a module, given time to perform these mad experiments

I've had no trouble at all on several machines I've used it with, starting with the 1.0 release.

:?: would you mind posting your kernel, its config, and your emerge info (to get glibc, gcc and threading model used) :?:

This sounds to me at least like an issue with certain kernel features such as the various schedulers, SMP and SMT and perhaps ACPI and APIC among others. It could also be the versions of these.

However I will not make the assumption that userspace components are also not to blame.

Thanks 8)

Im using it since "pre mm reiser4" on my desktop machine.

I _never_ had problems, ext3 gave me a really hard time compared to reiser4.

I've been using reiserfs4 for a few weeks without any problems. However, I've never experienced a hard crash or a power failure.

I'm using ck-sources with the reiserfs4 patch. All praise and glory to the Italian guy who makes the reiserfs4 livecd!

Hope this helps,
-Mike

I have Reiser4 and I did notice one problem. When preempt and Hyper Threading (I think its actually just a HT problem) are enabled, that I get hard lockups. If you get this, try either disabling HT in the bios (worked, with the stuff still in the kernel) or remove SMP and all that junk from the kernel and keep it enabled in the bios(my current set).

I've been using reiserfs4 for a few weeks without any problems. However, I've never experienced a hard crash or a power failure.

I'm using ck-sources with the reiserfs4 patch. All praise and glory to the Italian guy who makes the reiserfs4 livecd!

Hope this helps,

My latest in evil experimentation has been to first strip Reiser4, SMP, SMT, preemptive kernel, and pretty much anything that says "EXPERIMENTAL" out of the kernel. I then boot with acpi=off and pci=noacpi. That seems to be working rather well so far on 4 of my computers (all Intel but I admit that not all are Hyperthread capable). On the two hypterthread capable machines I did later re-enable SMT. One (an IBM ThinkCenter desktop) is running very smoothly. The 305 eSeries is not so lucky and in fact does not show two CPU's in /proc/cpuinfo nor does it say anything about SMP being disabled in the kernlog/dmesg. Its behavior isn't what I would call erratic, but running vmware on it (4.5.2.8848-r2) and it will become unusable no matter how many machines or amount of memory is in use by the VM's.

Both are running nitro (2.6.9-r2 is currently booted) and the latest mm-sources (various 2.6.9's) and have been for some time, yet I see no change in stability between releases.

I have ruled out many versions of baselayout, udev, hotplugging, gcc, and glibc (painful... PAINFULLY slow compile even with distcc throughout my little network)

The non HT capable machines are chugging along quite happily it seems.

My athlons at home seem to have other issues but otherwise are working great with Reiser4 now. I love lvm and large drive capacities! I can switch back between Reiser4 and ext3 or another partition but so far have seen no need :)

I really wish I knew what the magic bullet was here but I am stumped.

Unfortunately play time is over, I've got some deadlines to start meeting and home now is taking front and center. No time to troubleshoot more.

Good luck to anyone trying to solve this problem, because Reiser4, once stable, is a really great filesystem and promises to solve many long term problems that others just couldn't come close to thinking about solving. :D

I've been using R4 for my portage and portage_tmpdir since early March 2004 . ie intensive use when I compile something like glibc or xorg.

The only problem I can recall is an odd (unresolved) issue when compiling PEAR. This has never affected my files but it fails to compile.

[There is an amazing work around involving formatting a large ext3 file as R4 under loopback and using this as the portage tmpdir. This is a beautful demonstration of the power of Linux. Imagine making an NTFS partition inside a fat32 file !! Hell, maybe you could even do it from Linux.]

If you are having some issues especially with HT SMP etc it may be better to use 2.6.9.nitro1. Looking at the support threads it seems to have less issues in this area the nitro2.

nitro1 is currently what I regard as the most solid patch set of the moment.

I had reiser4 issues when it first came out, on my P4 HT box (i.e. SMP kernel). But who knows if that was actually the problem, because now I've got it running on an SMP box no problems, and it's been up for about 60 days. So who knows.

I suspect it will turn out to be a combination of a certain MB chipset and whether preemption etc are enabled.

Hi all!

I tried Reiser4 on my data partition (I had 2 other partitions, on 2 hard disks, which were in ReiserFS 3). It gave me some serious troubles, that is to say when writing files into the Reiser4 partition the system frequently hanged, and I was forced to use the Reset switch on the PC panel.

Now I reformatted the data partition in ReiserFS 3 and everything works just fine. I'll think I'll wait some time more to give a second try to Reiser4. ;-)

Michele.

this isn't really a reiser4 problem but a kernel problem. i'm pretty sure that you use patched gentoo-dev-sources. with ck-sources (now you have to patch them manually - 2.9.6-ck1 was patched from the beginning) - you won't have any problems.

@chemlabshade: won't you give us some more infos?

I used the 2.6.9 nitro kernel, which many people seem to like. That gave me the problem.

my last disaster was with 2.6.9-cko2. i had to coldboot my laptop right after i finished an install (thinkpad g50 hates vesafb-tng, apparently), and when it booted i started getting hundreds of "too many iterations in node..." errors from reiser4.

since the fs wouldn't mount, i booted a reiser4 livecd and fscked. this wiped out most of my files.

its possible that reiser4 interacts badly with certain patches (like vesafb-tng). its hard to say, and i can't really fault namesys for that.

I had no problems with reiser4 so far. But I begin to doubt that reiser4 is faster than reiserfs.

i'm not that sure either. i've run serveral test (especially comparing reiser4 to ext3) and i didn't get astonished. but i like the philosophy, which is very promising. especially the atomic attribute - i've hard rebooted really a lot but never waited for a filesystem check.

Reiser4 is an atomic filesystem, which means that your filesystem operations either entirely occur, or they entirely don't, and they don't corrupt due to half occuring. We do this without significant performance losses, because we invented algorithms to do it without copying the data twice.

Reiser4 is based on plugins, which means that it will attract many outside contributors, and you'll be able to upgrade to their innovations without reformatting your disk. If you like to code, you'll really like plugins....

I've noticed a tremendous increase in speed for some things. An "emerge sync" from my local portage mirror is probably twice as fast with reiser4 than with reiserfs 3.

i have used reiser4 alot since vanilla 2.6.5 release. i didnt have any major problems.. i have had the permission problem, which caused glibc to fail compile, but that was fixed very fast.. i use resier4 alot, and i love it.
