Posted: Fri Jun 06, 2003 6:14 pm Post subject: how to emerge adsl driver before emerge sync? |
|
|
I´ve managed to get to the point where i have to emerge sync.
But here is the problem.
I have an usb adsl modem, the .ebuild and .tar.bz2 files are located in a floppy.
when I type emerge -p eciadsl*.ebuild
i get an error that there is no /etc/profile directory
even though I did source /etc/profile
Anyone who knows a workaround? |

the complete error-msg would be helpful...
oh, and /etc/profile is a file, not a directory... _________________ To an engineer the glass is neither half full, nor half empty - it is just twice as big as it needs to be. |

Code: |
emerge eciadsl*.ebuild
>>> /etc/make.profile/make.defaults is not available, an 'emerge sync' will probably fix this
!!! No profile directory: system mode unavailable
|
of course i know emerge sync will fix that but i cant do that until I have connection and gentoo was so cleverly designed it does not incorporate usb adsl modems or pppd and a decent make becaue adsl-setup cant help me, modprobe cant help me, compiling the source is impossible because pppd is not installed and emerge pppd will not worj because emerge sync cant be done.
It is truly sad that this is only meant for ethernet users.
We are always in the disadvantage with almost everything.
especially when it comes to linux.....
I mean, usually an OS is installed mainly from the cd, and then you are able to install your drivers for internet so you can update it.
(has been the case for windows , mandrake linux and redhat (and suse also)
but distro´s with portage never understood this philosophy
thus i hereby must conclude i will never get gentoo installed because of this simple but umportant matter.....
That´s why i think there should me more modules in it. The more devices that are supported and the more programs that will be loaded (like pppd,..) the more you will be able to setup.
But i guess that´ll be a dream too good to be true.... |

i dont know if it is enough but here is my make.default:
Code: |
h2o root # cat /etc/make.profile/make.defaults
# Copyright 2002 Gentoo Technologies, Inc.
# System-wide defaults for the gcc 3.2 Portage system
USE="x86 oss 3dnow apm arts avi berkdb crypt cups encode gdbm gif gpm gtk imlib
java jpeg kde gnome libg++ libwww mikmod mmx motif mpeg ncurses nls oggvorbis
opengl pam pdflib png python qt quicktime readline sdl slang spell ssl
svga tcpd truetype X xml2 xmms xv zlib"

I doubt i will ever get t to work.
I tried the source tarball of it and that refused to run.
I booted with the knoppix cd to have a full kernel, modprobed all I needed (even ppp*)
I compiled the source but could not install it because it referred to the cd.
So I chroot to hda3 and installed it there, then ran the config tool and then startmodem.
result: n_hdlc succesfully loaded
firmware succesfully loaded
Eicon Diva ADSL USB WAN modem succesfully detected
nice: pppd: No such file or directory
just because the modprobe of ppp* was in the other root and not in the one I chrooted in.
And doing one in here doesnt work because then it says the modules cant be found there.
I just wish they would makea livvecd with a basic gentoo on it that you can locally install with a basic Portage tree, sufficient to run a gentoo and then enabling its user to install its drivers properly and make connection to the internet for updates.
But i fear this is something that won´t be done |
