emerge & sed get lost after 'emegre system'

I'm working with a stage 2 tarball. After I execute 'emerge system' emerge cleans out both itself and sed makeing it impossible to continue the installation. I have to untar the original tarball to get functionality back. From then on out anytime a emerge something unless I carfully watch and hit Cntl-c at the right time emerge wipes everything out all over again. This is getting very frustrating help!

this doesnt solve the cause of your problem, but might be a quick help... set AUTOCLEAN=no in your /etc/make.conf...

notice that this will only mask the sympton and is no cure - there seems to be a severe problem with your portage
