Hi,
I'm trying to get my laptop sorted out and am having a lot of problems. I want to use a >2.6.21 suspend 2 kernel so I can use powertop to optimise my system and use the suspend to disk/ ram functions. I'm having a lot of problems, most of which an upgrade to gnome 2.6.18 hasn't helped.

When I use any suspend2 kernel above 2.6.18-suspend2-r1, my networking fails in two ways, first, although gnome network monitor claims that the network is connected wirelessly, to get it to do anything, I have to manually restart net.eth1. Also after about 15 minutes web pages stop loading gradually getting slower and slower and mail's won't send. Rebooting to 2.6.18 solves both of these problems, and I'm using the ipw2200 kernel modules, build for the 2.6.21 in both cases.

Suspend 2 seems to have broken completely, it suspends, but doesn't restart normally and I have to hold the power down for four seconds to reboot.

I'm also getting a problem with screen flickering, once every couple of minutes but this might be unrelated and is intermittent. I have turned off all screensavers in case that was what was doing it.

I heard about a userspace suspend, is this viable project and has anyone had any luck with it?

MY laptop is an Acer travelmate 8006 which is a centrino system with ati graphics, with the fglrx drivers installed.
Thanks!

Yepp. I run sys-power/suspend-0.5 on my laptop with regular gentoo sources, and it works better than suspend2 ever did. I have a problem with my network card, but it's a weird card. I have just created a wrapper script that stops the network, suspends (with s2ram or s2disk) and then reenables the network immediately. The last line won't be run until the computer resumes, anyway.

Right, I've dropped to a gentoo sources kernel, but how do I use the userspace suspend? Is there documentation, as there's no man page?

Try to run equery f suspend (part of gentoolkit). There should be some documentation there. If not, check in the tar-ball. I installed it before there was an ebuild, so that's what I did.
