<-- total noob, plz be gentle
System specs:
2.4ghz P4
Gigabyte 8PE667 Ultra
256mb pc2100 sheisty brand
80gb maxtor HD
HDc1 - windows2000 (currently not running thx to bootloader- what (hdx,x) is this partition?)
HDc2 - boot partition
HDc3 - swap file (512mb)
HDc4 - root
16x Toshiba DVD
Sapphire Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb
I think thats it...
Anyways, I got fluxbox running by some miracle, except I have one problem: I have pink lines all OVER the place. Windows does this to a lesser extent, until I install the drivers fot the graphics card, then it is perfect...I did emerge ati-drivers, but it is still doing it. Any ideas? I searched the forums but I couldn't find anything...thx
My 2nd question is: How do I install non-emerge stuff...? There was a script/app that I wanted to install, except all it had on the website was a .tar.gz that I could not untar (right term?) using 'tar -xv filename'... Is there some general way to install everything (sort of parallel to window's setup.exe/install.exe?)
thanks... _________________ "ignorance is bliss for stupid people."

1) probably a problem with your XFree86 - take a look at /etc/X11/XF86Config - perhaps something with the monitor refresh settings
2) there is a standard way to 'install' most linux progs:
- tar -xvzf someprog.tar.bz2
- cd someprog
- ./configure
- make
- make install
if 'tar' doesnt work u probably have not installed it (or bzip2)
a lot of progs also come in the RPM format, u will need to 'emerge rpm', before u will be able to install them - see 'man tar', 'man bzip2' and 'man rpm' for details... _________________ To an engineer the glass is neither half full, nor half empty - it is just twice as big as it needs to be. |
