While running revdep-rebuild (trying to fix something down a long long chain of problems :( ), I got the following when revdep died on ilmbase. Ilmbase failed when I tried to emerge -u --newuse --deep world, which was the result of me trying to emerge -pv --prune python, which was the result of python blocking an emerge -e system, which was the result of seeing a libstdc error(much like the one below), and trying to get gcc working nicely. I tried to read the forums as well as the gentoo docs, but wasn't able to find a solution.

I'm running a 2.6.22-r6 kernel on x86_64. If you need any more information, don't hesitate to ask.

Code:
./eLut: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.6/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by ./eLut)
make[1]: *** [eLut.h] Error 1
make[1]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/media-libs/ilmbase-1.0.0/work/ilmbase-1.0.0/Half'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

I would try reemerging gcc, but this is just a guess.
also, post here the outputs of the following commands:

emerge --info
emerge -pDuNv world
emerge -pev system
emerge -pv --prune python

Have you forgotten to run `emerge --update --newuse --deep world` prior to
prune?  It may be necessary to manually uninstall packages that no longer
exist in the portage tree since it may not be possible to satisfy their
dependencies.  Also, be aware of the --with-bdeps option that is documented
in `man emerge`.

If you would like to ignore dependencies then use --nodeps.

Also, I am re emerging GCC, even though I'm almost positive I tried that (as well as trying to emerge libstdc++, but I don't believe I found anything for that)

Thanks for your help so far.

Don't emerge libstdc++ if it is not already installed.
If you have libtdc++ and nothing depends on it, you should probably unmerge it.
You don't need this package in normal circunstances. I think that the vast majority of packages use the C++ library that already comes with your gcc, and this package is only for programs that don't work with the normal C++ library.

The problematic version of python seems to be dev-lang/python-2.3.6-r2.

You can manually unmerge that instead of using --prune (but first check that no program depends on this specific python version)

Also, do you know what is this ./eLut ?

I have no clue what ./eLut is, I assumed it was some sort of system thinger and didn't pay any attention to it.

This is odd:
Code:
 # emerge -C =dev-lang/python-2.3.6-r2

--- Couldn't find '=dev-lang/python-2.3.6-r2' to unmerge.

>>> No packages selected for removal by unmerge

So I should emerge -C libstdc++ too? Isn't that what everything is having problems with? (I didn't try emerging it until I had problems with it)
Any ideas?

It tries to emerge it to fix something and fails.

Thanks for your help!

emerge -C =dev-lang/python-2.3.6 worked, and I'm going to emerge -e sytem as the blockers are gone. I'll post back if anything goes wrong.

I tried to run revdep again, but it is still not working. (emerge -e system went smoothly, but I still haven't resolved the original problem)

Heres a large part of the end of the output for revdep-rebuild (From just before where it starts trying to emerge ilmbase):
Code:
 * Generated new /root/.revdep-rebuild.4_packages_raw and /root/.revdep-rebuild
4_package_owners

 * Cleaning list of packages to rebuild
 * Generated new /root/.revdep-rebuild.4_packages

 * Assigning packages to ebuilds
 * Generated new /root/.revdep-rebuild.4_ebuilds

 * Evaluating package order
 * Generated new /root/.revdep-rebuild.5_order

 * All prepared. Starting rebuild

 * revdep-rebuild failed to emerge all packages.
 * you have the following choices:
 * - If emerge failed during the build, fix the problems and re-run revdep-rebu
ld.
 * - Use /etc/portage/package.keywords to unmask a newer version of the package
 *   (and remove /root/.revdep-rebuild.5_order to be evaluated again)
 * - Modify the above emerge command and run it manually.
 * - Compile or unmerge unsatisfied packages manually,
 *   remove temporary files, and try again.
 *   (you can edit package/ebuild list first)
 *
 * To remove temporary files, please run:
 * rm /root/.revdep-rebuild*.?_*

Perhaps this is gcc-4.2.0's fault?
Perhaps you should file a bug report.

In any event, you can always run revdep-rebuild -pv, get a list of the packages that would be emerged, take ilmbase out, and emerge them. Perhaps if you emerge other packages the problem will go away, or you can simply wait until the bug (if it is a bug) is fixed.

Do you still have gcc 4.1? You could try building with it.
