Hi,

i tried to install gentoo using the current minimal live cd (2007.0). Everything seems to work fine.

But as i wanted to partition my harddisk, fdisk told me: "Opened disk read-only - you have no permission to write". Going on, it told me, that the size of my harddisk is only about 59 mb and completely unformated.

I attempted some boot options to fix the problem but without any success.

Does anybody know a solution to fix this problem?

My relevant hardware :

Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 R3.3,Intel P965
WesternDigital Caviar WD2500JS, 250GB 7200, SATA-II

Thx for you help!

PS: Already have two partitions on the harddisk (50 gb, 150gb). Both ntfs and windows xp installed on the smaller partition.

MeisterPetz,

Welcome to Gentoo

It sounds as if you were attempting to partition your CD-ROM. Its both read only and unpartitioned.

Boot the CD and run the lspci command. Post the lines that mention
IDE, SATA or RAID.

Hi,

you are right.. must be the live cd... ! 59 MB is the size of the image.

Ok...

IDE, SATA, RAID :

00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) 4 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.5 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) 2 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 02)
03:00.1 IDE interface: JMicron Technologies, Inc. JMicron 20360/20363 AHCI Controller (rev 02)

MeisterPetz,

You did say you have a SATA disk ?

The kernel should be able to deal with your Intel ICH8 hardware but the liveCD may have issues with JMicron.
When you install your own kernel, it will be ok.

If you cannot see a /dev/sda make sure the drive is connected to one of the Intel Controllers.

Its a bit difficult to open my pc because its inside my desk ;-). But i have done it.

Ive put the connector of my harddisk to the connector where the dvd is plugged in.. but the harddisk cannot be discovered.

I have 4 yellow sata-connectors onboard (2x2) and 2 purple connectors onboard. (seems as if these are the intel connectors because lspci detects a 4 port controller and a 2 port controller).

/dev/hda is still my dvd<<<-- its also a s-ata drive

ls /dev/s <tab> only shows :

shm stderr stdin stdout synth

there is no sda/b or so... but the sata drivers are loaded...

any further ideas?

Perhaps some Bios setting help :

i dont know what it is, but it tell you the settings ;-) :

SATA AHCI Mode - Disabled
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode - Disabled

Onboard SATA/IDE Device - Enabled
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode - IDE

perhaps native / legacy mode is important??

It works now! Changed

SATA Port0-3 Native Mode to Enabled! Now it runs in native mode and not in legacy mode and the disks have been detected!!

But still the question : What is the difference between these modes?? Differences in speed?

MeisterPetz,

Set your SATA to AHCI Mode. The kernel has a AHCI driver.

I'm not sure what the other settings do - experiment, see what works.
