I've installed Gentoo via modem with a chroot terminal from my Mandrake 8 Linux.

I'm able to boot into Gentoo fine and I'm gradually setting things up.

However I'm unable to get my isp to accept a login. First I used pppconfig to setup PPP. Then I issue the command:
pppd call X-treme

I can hear my modem dial then go through all that handshaking noise. However there is a failure to establish a ppp link and the line is dropped.

So I installed wvdial and set it up with wvdialconfig and made the proper edits to wvdial.conf.

wvdial makes the call. It indicates that it has entered the username and password then it says Authorization Failed or something to that effect.

The thing is that on Mandrake I use KDE's dialer kppp and it works ok.

I've got X installed but it's not running and I don't want to use kppp anyway. I'd like to be able to begin and end a ppp session from a command line.

I'm sure I'm getting my DNS info from thhe ISP because I certianly never entered it into a file nor do I even have that info.

PPP is enabled in the kernel and the modules seem to load correctly. My modem is a winmodem but I emerged the (masked) ltmodem package (the same version I use on Mandrake) and it seems to work ok too.

I can give you any information you can tell me how to get.

I'm deeply grateful to any help any of you may provide.

This could be a PAP server with some weird settings, perhaps you could ask you ISP for some detailed specs, or maby they even know how to do it with pppconfig? Anyway if you can find anymore detailed info on your isp I am sure someone around here will be able to help you further...

Good luck!

Problem solved, you were right! I'd set pppconf and wvdial to use chat but the server wanted pap. Pretty embaressing but alls well that ends well.
