Remove /usr/share/applnk. After you logout and log back in, the KDE menu will have disappeared from your GNOME menu. :D

maybe killall gnome-panel

that should restart the panel at least - maybe that's enough.

Yep that, and I find it useful to restart nautilus when editing the menus. Otherwise they don't appear in the "Start Here" thingymajig.

if you're running the fam service, they should take place immediately (note I said should.... it doesn't always work that way for me, though it's supposed to..)

You can install fam (file access monitor I think?) by doing
Code:
emerge fam
/etc/init.d/fam start
