|
|
Everything was fine, I had xfree 4.3.0-r1 running and my monitor set at 1024x768. Then I got this mad idea to update to r3 (unsuccessfull) unfortunatly X seemed to be hosed, so I emerged r2 (emerged ok), then I foolishly let etc-update have it's way with the config files, and before you know it I was looking at a virtual 1024x768 desktop thru a 640x480 screen (fortunatly able to scroll with the mouse). What followed was several hours of experimentation with the XF86Config file, to no avail, I tried every fix I could find on these forums: changing the "Modes" values, adding "Virtual 1024 768", monitor settings, used xf86config and xf86cfg, tried both the ati and radeon drivers (for the radeon 700 card).
Anybody have any new ideas?
Thanks |

Your probably going to have to post your XF86Config file for this to be solved...

Unfortunatley for you, that looks fine. Have you tried other resolutions and bit depths to see what happens?

Are you sure it's reading the right configuration?
If I remember correctly, XFree can read configurations from a few different locations. |

It is using the correct config file (the console messages say so) and if I specify 640x480 then the virtual and physical screens are the same size, color depth seems to make no difference. |

What window manager are you using? Waimea for instance keeps it virtual desktop size (in pixels) in a config file. You may want to check the startup files for your window manager in your homedirectory or adjust them by hand with the graphical tools used for said windowmanager.

I have been looking at XFree86.0.log and found these interesting lines
Code: |
(II) RADEON(0): Clone modes validation ------------
(WW) RADEON(0): Monitor0: Using default hsync range of 28.00-33.00kHz
(WW) RADEON(0): Monitor0: using default vrefresh range of 43.00-72.00Hz
(II) RADEON(0): Clock range: 12.00 to 350.00 MHz
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "640x350" (hsync out of range)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "320x175" (hsync out of range)
....
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "2048x1536" (width too large for virtual size)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "1024x768" (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using mode "1024x768" (no mode of this name)
(**) RADEON(0): Virtual size is 1024x768 (pitch 1024)
(**) RADEON(0): *Mode "1024x768"
(**) RADEON(0): Default mode "640x480": 25.2 MHz, 31.5 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "640x480" 25.20 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -hsync -vsync
(**) RADEON(0): Default mode "320x240": 12.6 MHz, 31.5 kHz, 60.1 Hz (D)
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "320x240" 12.60 320 328 376 400 240 245 246 262 doublescan -hsync -vsync
|
I have tried a variety of things in the Monitor section including
Code: |
Option "IgnoreEDID" "on"
|
but it seems to ignore them as much as it ignores the HorizSync and VertRefresh. |
