Hello,

I'm sorry if this has been answered before, I searched the forums quite a bit for an answer, but to no avail...

Is there a way to limit the amount of ram that the operating system can see? I am having a problem with maxing out my motherboard's ram (two boards are having this same problem).
When I put the max amount of memory in the system, the boards will see more ram than it actually has (for example: 3.3gb rather than 3gb and 160mb rather than 128mb).
This causes a problem while booting the operating system. I was able to fix this problem back in the day with the 128mb machine by using windows' "maxmem" boot option. But I need a solution
for linux. Is there something I need to put into the bootloader, or something I need do to the kernel to limit the amount of ram the operating system sees?

Thanks!

FYI: On my 2nd year straight using Gentoo and loving it!

You can add the mem=128M in the boot parameters of your linux loader (grub, lilo etc).

You can find more information in kernel's documentation.

For memory on Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt it says:
Quote:
mem=nn[KMG] [KNL,BOOT] Force usage of a specific amount of memory
Amount of memory to be used when the kernel is not able
to see the whole system memory or for test.
[IA-32] Use together with memmap= to avoid physical
address space collisions. Without memmap= PCI devices
could be placed at addresses belonging to unused RAM.

Hope it helps.
