practically you will have to start from scratch.
so many changes have occured after 2004
it is not worth spending so much time to upgrade from 2004 which is almost impossible. _________________ reach out a little bit more to catch it (DON'T BELIEVE the advocate part under my user name) |

The reason why I dont want to reinstall the entire computer is that I have a lot of old servecis (now requested from a customer) running on it.. Just wanna upgrade the entire systems..=) |

I agree - Even going from 2005.0 to 2006.1 was excruciatingly painful - I ended up just wiping the system and rebuilding it because it was FAR simpler.
Upgrading from abandoned versions is almost as painful as trying to do an in-place upgrade of a binary-based OS.
You can do it if you have lots of time to weedle through all the little niggles, but backup like hell first if you even think of trying to upgrade from 2004 because if it was anyling like my experience, you will probably break something that stops everything from working...
Is is so hard to re-install the current apps you have on a clean build? |

i would run the same system without disturbing it for the present to serve clients.
make a new partition and install stage3 and snapshot. after you can transfer these services to new successful installation you can remove the old system.
i am sure your computer will have more downtime if you try to upgrade from 2004. portage itself get stuck as you have already seen. take care. of the clients i mean.
The reason why I dont want to reinstall the entire computer is that I have a lot of old servecis (now requested from a customer) running on it.. Just wanna upgrade the entire systems..=)
it is not defenitely just upgrade. troubles to expect expat problems and other missing packages in the portage . there may not be replacements available for your current desktop gui version if any.
i am not trying to discourrage you. but as you say customer requests are to be maintained try a new install in another partition.
eselect profile list will show available profiles.
eselect profiles set (the number you want to set.)
you probably have to emerge eselect which may or may not be there for your old bash. _________________ reach out a little bit more to catch it (DON'T BELIEVE the advocate part under my user name) |
