I've been trying to emerge Enlightenment on a second machine for several days now without success. Has anyone else had a problem? There's something about ftp.enlightenment.org being down in one forum thread, but according to the error messages when I try to build it, it seems the file in question is downloaded already.

Also: why does it matter whether or not enlightenment.org is operating? I thought the actual distribution files were held on the mirrors. If correct installation of files necessarily must resolve different sites for different files, isn't that increasing the odds dramatically that one will be down and the whole installation will bomb? I probably don't understand the process adequately, but I'm curious about this.

Here is the output of my latest emerge attempt:

It almost looks to me like there is something wrong with the ebuild. It appears to be correctly downloading the file, then not recognizing that it is there.

there have been some inconsistencies reported with that fnlib version and the servers. delete the file from /usr/portage/distfiles/ and wget the file manually from one of the locations. the file is much bigger than 9k!

Ok, just emerge'd enlightenment-cvs, but I have a problem.

First, it seems to be a bit old source distribution in a tarball and not pulled from cvs.

Second, it looks pretty at first, but nothing much works in e17. I can't do any settings, and it just stops functioning after a few clicks. Then no menu selection works and sometimes it just quits out of the blue (and back to gdm).

Is this normal? Or is there a more up-to-date version that I can play with?

I'm trying to install 0.16.5.
I went to enlightenment.org and downloaded fnlib-0.5-r1 without any trouble and put it in /usr/portage/distfiles and that seems to have fixed the problem (so far).

But I also went to about five of the mirrors, and all of them have 9800 byte file sizes showing in their listings. It appears that fnlib might be corrupt at the central site and all of the mirrors have picked it up. Maybe? Just a thought.

Anyway, thanks.

E17 is not ready for usage, very buggy.
Try E16 instead, they released 16.6 pre3 few days ago.
Ebuild in a other thread on this forum.
