i have a abit IP35-E motherboard which contains a iCH9 sata controller. when boot off the live cd i cant see my sata drives. i have read a few posts which describe setting the "OnChip SATA Mode" to RAID of AHCI in the bios, as a work around. the abit IP35 has this option but not my IP35-E.
i have read conflicting posts which state that the ICH9 is supported 2.6.19, while some say 2.6.21+.
my gentoo livecd is 2.6.19-gentoo-r5 and i dont see the drives under it.
has anyone had this problem or seen a solution?

i have read this post which describes, booting off another distro with a more recent kernel, then installing.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-580220-highlight-ich9.html
my internet connection is on so good and getting a 700mb cd might take a few days. is there a way to get a newer kernel on a the gentoo minimal boot cd?

thanks
alex

My friend had this issue a bit ago. He ended up using SuSE as it worked without doing anything special.

I think the correct way to solve this with the current livecd is to set your disks to be in PATA emulation mode and install a base system. Then compile your own custom kernel with ICH9 support and reboot with that after setting your disk back to enhanced/native ICH9 mode.

Use Knoppix and install Gentoo with the alternative procedure :)

waiting for knoppix to download i was subject to Hughes.net Fair Access Pollicy, so now i am at a 56k modem speed for a while.
however, i found a PCI-SATA card i had lying around, which was bundled in with a hard drive i bought a while ago. its a promise sata150 tx2+.
gentoo supports this, so i am installing to it, until i get a newer kernel going, then i will switch and change my configuration appropriately.

ill let you know how i finish.

the PCI-SATA card worked. i did a manual install and compiled the new kernel with support with intel ich9 sata controller support. rebooted and switched the sata drive back to mobo controller. the drive was /dev/sda which was what i had been using in my fstab and grub.conf so everything worked first boot.

the solution for people who dont have a PCI-SATA card lying around is to boot off a newer boot CD (i never found a good light one), and get to a terminal to do a manual install.

thanks for the help

afrodocter1, as I mentioned in my original post you listed in your post, the system rescue cd is just 125 MB and it has lots of other tools. It also works from flash drive, no need to use CD.
