After upgrade to xorg 1.4 my kdm/xdm started to act strangely.
When i boot up everything works fine. KDM gets started and I login to my DE/WM, whatever I chose for that session.
But when I logout X dies, KDM doesn't start, instead I am thrown at virtual terminal. With ps I can see that KDM is running and when I execute /etc/init.d/xdm restart I get KDM login screen. This happens with every logout from every DE/WM.

Dylan,
I was having a similar issue and basically it boiled down to errors with some of my startup scripts. As some were failing it would always bring me back to VT1. Kdm (via xdm) was still running on VT7 and I could switch there with ctrl + alt +f7 but it would not stay on VT7 automatically if any of the scripts were failing.
I would look and see which, if any, of your init scripts are failing. Fix these and see how it goes. The forum will usually have solutions to your various startup issues. Onvce these are resolved you will probably see this goes away.
Shout back if you have trouble.
thx

You might want to add a somewhat undocumented option to the kdmrc file located in
/usr/kde/3.5/share/config/kdm/kdmrc for kde3
or
/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc for kde4
Under the section titled: [X-*-Core] add an option "TerminateServer=true"
That forces X to restart every time you logout and go back to the KDM login scr _________________ Gary |
