old background still shows behind kde splash

i've changed the background in kde shows on the desktop when kde loads but when the splash screen comes up it still shows the old background behind it?

Could that by any chance be the KDM background?

Most probably that's just the x root window. You should specify how you've set your "old" background before. Adding an xsetroot early on in your startup scripts should actually be a brute force method to solve that problem, but it's not the neatest solution.
