hello,

problem solved....

perhaps someone can use this information also:

I tried to deactivate most kernel features to minimize the kernel...

so i deactivated also legacy /proc/ide/ support (under ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support

but this must be activated (for gnome desktop)
for kde i don't know k3b could be used without this kerneloption so i assume this is a "gnome" problem...

Bye,
Liu

Thanks liutom,

I had the same problem, but for a think for different reason. I don't recall disabling legacy /proc/ide/support, but perhaps I did. It seemed like perhaps at some point the flag may have been switched in kernel config at some kernel upgrade, not really sure and I'm not going back to test.

What made my problem difficult to diagnose is that I was a K3b devotee, but lost that when I decided not to carry around the KDE libs anymore since I'm a Gnome, GTK, user. That made me switch my burning app, and I thought that my problem was related to killing something when removing KDE and all of its dependencies.

Nice find :!:

Hi kmarasco,

this is really the same Problem :-)

I switched from KDE back to Gnome

Gnome is my favorite DE but i wanted to try out KDE...

so i used for 3 Months KDE
in the meantime i decided to reduce kernelsize
so i killed all kerneloptions but tested it with my (kde-running) System...
k3b works quite fine without "/proc/ide/support" but all Gnome (and also Nero) applications NOT...
so gnome runs fine before my switch to kde it has something to do with my kernel :-)

Bye Liu
