Hi, sorry about being off topic, but you have the same video card/monitor that i have, and I have no idea how to get it running, I have followed the page about setting up Xorg, but it keeps telling me that it can't find the drivers, what should I do? Thanks.

ocean,

Please show us the output of lspci, so we can see what Video card you have. Exact error messages also help to home in on your problem.
Xorg needs a minumum of three drivers.
One each for your Video card, pointer device (mouse, touchpad, tablet ...) and keyboard.

From the generic nature of your error report, we can't tell which driver is missing, it could be any or all of those, which points to you not setting VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES in make.conf. It could also be just that you have not yet configured Xorg.

when I tried to use the lspci command, it tells me that it does not recognize it, what package should I download to get this tool? I know that my video card is intel 945GM, infact, I'm pretty sure that this is what my computer have. In my make.conf I have INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse" and VIDEO_CARDS="i810"

ocean,

You need to
Code:
emerge pciutils
to get lspci.
When you post the output of lspci, also include your xorg.conf, so we can see what you have asked xorg to do and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, which tells what Xorg actually did when it started.
Those three items should provide all the data we need to fix your issue.

ocean,

You are getting the hang of posting the information needed to fix your problem.
Your first error is here:-
Code:
(II) intel(0): EDID vendor "SEC", prod id 13875
(II) Loading sub module "int10"
(II) LoadModule: "int10"
(II) Reloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libint10.so
(II) intel(0): initializing int10
(WW) intel(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(II) intel(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000
(EE) intel(0): unknown type(0xffffffff)=0xff
That indicates your kernel is missing
Code:
Processor type and features  --->
   [*] Enable VM86 support
while you are looking at your kernel, check the same menu for
Code:
   <M> /dev/cpu/*/msr - Model-specific register support
[*] MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support. Those options must be on.

The second error
Code:
(EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such file or directory)
(WW) intel(0): /dev/agpgart is either not available, or no memory is available
for allocation.  Using pre-allocated memory only.
(==) intel(0): VideoRam: 7932 KB
Indicates you need to look at
Code:
Device Drivers  --->
   Character devices  --->
    <M> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
       <M>   Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support
<M> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
    <M>   Intel 830M, 845G, 852GM, 855GM, 865G
      <M>     i915 driver
You may use either <M> or <*> here.
I guess you used genkernel to make your kernel, as it leaves these options off. The suit your chipset.
You can still use genkernel to rebuild your kernel but you must add the --menuconfig option and check/set these options yourself.

Boot into your new kernel, test Xorg and post your new log.

ocean,

Heres your list of warnings an errors. I don't know them all.
Code:
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
Xorg can communicate with your acpi directly using this socket. Its not essential but may be useful for power savinings. The system may work around it too, my laptop is too old so I can't test.

Code:
(WW) intel: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1) found
Your graphics chip can control two independant displays but you have only configured one. If you add another display, you need to extend your xorg.conf to describe how to control it. This is normal for a single display set up.

Code:
(WW) intel(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
Your BIOS checksum failed - this seems to be normal on Intel integrated chipsets.

Code:
(WW) intel(0): Option "PreferedMode" is not used
You have a n option in your Section "Device" that the driver does not understand and its been ignored.
Code:
(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
The system tried to open a file that you need for AIGLX. AIGLX suggests you are trying to use compiz. Get everything else working before you try that.

Code:
(EE) intel(0): I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0
I don't know this one. From Vblank, I guess it has something to do with frame switching during the Vertical Blanking interval.

Here's your error:
Code:
checking for perl... /usr/bin/perl
checking for XML::Parser... configure: error: XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool
You will need to install the XML parser perl module it seems, I am not sure which package that is exactly as I do not have a gentoo system with me right now.

ocean,

Code:
emerge dev-perl/XML-Parser
is your workaround.
You have found a bug. The package dev-util/intltool-0.35.5 needs dev-perl/XML-Parser but emerge has not worked out that its needed.
Thats not supposed to happen. Please check bugs.gentoo.org for a prior report. If you are first, please create a new bug report.
That way it will get fixed for people that come after you. Welcome to the Open Source Community.

I think "preferedmode" should be "preferredmode"
(Note 2 r's).

As for the i915_dri error, have you selected the kernel
drm modules for you video chip?

after trying to emerge the XML parser, it works until I get to this pango file, it keeps saying there's a make error

Code:
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking pango-1.16.5.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/pango-1.16.5/work
 * Fixing OMF Makefiles ...

lots of junk follows that, and this is the end of the log file.

the only thing I can see is
Code:
error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

which probably means something is missing, but I have no clue what to emerge to fix this.

Thanks.

ocean,

This error happens because you have a stage tarball built for the old expat library and the expat part has been updated to use a new interface.
This breaks everything that depends on the old expat interface as the two are not compatible.

Proceed as follows.
emerge gentoolkit if you don't already have it. mzbot in #gentoo says
Quote:
expat-2.0.1 is not ABI compatible with earlier versions. Run the following in bash to fix: "emerge -n1 '>=portage-2.1.2.12' portage-utils && emerge -qep world | grep --color=never -oFf <(scanelf -plRBF '%F %n' | awk '/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}' | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e "libtool\ncurl") | xargs emerge -1". If a specific package fails, "/msg mzbot faq remerge-deep" for advice (gtk+/pango are common)
and
Code:
If, while trying to fix the expat mess, a package won't build then run the following (substituting "gtk+" with the name of whichever package that failed): "emerge -n portage-utils && grep -vxFf <(emerge -qep system) <(emerge -qep gtk+) | sed -rne '/^\[ebuild/{s/(^| )\[[^]]*\]( |$)//gp}' | xargs qatom | awk '{print $1"/"$2}' | xargs emerge -1". Afterwards, run "emerge --resume" to continue.
tat seems to fix it for most users.

Copy and paste the commands.

ok, I have tried the commands that you give me, I don't really understand what exactly it does, but now I get a new error when I tried to emerge gnome, I even tried emerge -e system and emerge -e world, but the error is still there, here's the output from emerge gnome:

*EDIT*
I have also added X to the USE flag, but that didn't help either, I guess X flag means somethingelse.

ocean,

Close.
Code:
Please re-emerge x11-libs/cairo with the X USE flag set
Add X to your USE=" " in /etc/make.conf (not x, its case sensitive)
Now
Code:
emerge -1 x11-libs/cairo
so cairo is made with its optional support for Xorg.
When that completes, contine with Gnome.

The commands I gave you above build a list of the packages broken by the expat update then emerge them against the new expat so that they work again.

Now I can finally get into a graphical interface, thank you very much NeddySeagoon, I still have a few questions left, first does

Code:
emerge -1 <package>

means to re-emerge the package again?

and also I have a few more question not related to Desktop Environments, such as I still need to get my wireless working, and my speaker as well, should I ask here?

Thanks.

ocean,

Code:
emerge -1 <package>
is shorthand for emerge --oneshot.
That option does not add the package to your world file, which contains a list of all the packages you have emerged with commands like
Code:
emerge gnome
but it does not list all the packages that emerge has calculated you need to support your request.
cario is always installed as a supporting package. Its just untidy if it gets into the world file. No long term harm is done.

Start a new thread to ask about wireless networking in Kernel and Hardware. If you post it here many possible helpers will miss it.
Search first, your questions may already be answered. Use google and put
Code:
site:gentoo.org
after your search terms, so google on searches gentoo.

If you have a WXGA, then the max resolution for the screen is 1280x800. The card itself can do higher resolutions, but the screen won't work with higher resolutions. I have tried. :(
