Posted: Sun Oct 14, 2007 2:58 pm Post subject: 945GM wont work in 1440x900 :( |
|
|
I think i tried everything and i just cant manage to get X to boot in 1440x900, instead it boots up in 1280x800 in 60Hz. The problem is that before I updated X, I could manage to get X to wirk with 1280x800 but in 75Hz, which is acceptable, since I couldn`t get 1440 ..
.. BUT .. now .. after I updated X .. i can`t set 1280x800@75Hz or 1440x900 .. things are not working as I thought it would ..
so .. the question should be .. is there any chanse for me to boot X in 1440x900? .. if not .. how to set it in 1280x800@75Hz instead ?
here is my 915resolution

What machine is that ?
I remember discovering, ( under windows !) that my wife's emebedded graphics on Thinkpad laptop (which I think is 945G) could work only with modes that are hardwired in firmware and noway I could set the other ones. |

If it is a laptop, are you playing with it's own screen or the external one (as I think) ? |

well .. with its own .. i guess ..
it`s a Screen0 .. right? ..
edit:
UPS .. that was dumb mistake .. i have corrected it .. yet I still have a problem ..
when I set the screen resolution to 1440x900 xorg fails with error that the settings are bad and when I set it to 1280x800 it works.
is it possible that i can`t get that with my 945gm?
P.S. - here`s the last xorg.log

What is the native resolution of your laptop display ? You should not run it at any other resolutions - it is meaningless.
LCD screen natively are usually run at 60 Hz and do not require more. 75 HZ etc were needed for CRT monitors where flicker was an issue. |

yes .. I agree .. but with higher refresh rate i could get greater resolution .. so i could get a little smaller picture with higer refresh rate ..
but, now, main goal is to make it boot in 1440x900, which I btw saw already on some ubuntu and some fcs amilo with the same monitor and it`s a great picture .. I would very much like to run that res on my tecra
the native resolution is 12800x800 but it`s d*mn hugde for my taste .. i would like to run 1440 _________________ http://droopia.net |

what happens if you downgrade to the 1.74 i810 driver?

Refresh rate has nothing to do with image size. With CRT's, a CRT monitor that is physically capable of running with a higher refresh rate is probably capable of running with a higher resolution, but this is not the case for LCD's. playahater wrote: | but, now, main goal is to make it boot in 1440x900, which I btw saw already on some ubuntu and some fcs amilo with the same monitor and it`s a great picture .. Your text will be all f*cked up if you don't. And unless the guy took a picture of his computer and scanned it and uploaded that, you wouldn't see the pixel distortion that he would see from running an LCD at a non-native res. And are you positive that his native resolution isn't 1440x900?
The screwed up formatting of this thread is caused by the LS_COLORS="...................." line in playahater's not having any spaces in it. That line is diagnostically irrelevant and makes reading the rest of the thread difficult and annoying. I suggest removing it. |

well .. first of all .. i dunno what is wrong with this thread .. happens for the first time for me ..
I`m writting from konqueror .. and what LS_COLORS .. from bash?

I have read on toshiba`s site that the reslolution for this model is 1280x800 .. i asume that is native ..
i dunno how come i can`t make X run in greater res , even though 915resolution sais that bios has been successfuly patched
and as i said .. I saw that resolution already running on 15.4", and i would like try it at least

well .. i know that refresh rate for lcd`s is smth completely different from crt`s .. but somehow, i had a little smaller picture before I updated X, and the settings were the same, except i had higher refresh rate .. ..
but that is completely different subject .. so let`s see how to make it run on 1440?
i`ll try the older driver and see what happens .. i`ll post results ..

Since there aren't any spaces in that line, it prints the entire string in the same line. If you edit the post and delete that line, the formatting of this thread will go back to normal.
edit: nm, the mods edited your post for ya. playahater wrote: | Quote: | I strongly, strongly suggest running at the native resolution. Your text will be all f*cked up if you don't. 915resolution won't fix your problem. 915resolution adds modelines to the bios. The trouble is that the driver is rejecting any modes higher than 1280 wide or taller than 800 because your screen is incapable of displaying it. Also, 915resolution is unnecessary for >=xf86-video-i810-2.0.0 - that functionality is built in by default. |

playahater,
I've fixed your very long lines that were upsetting the forums software.
A few things ....
It would be good to see the /var/log/Xorg.0.log generated when you set your VertRefresh to 60 (or comment it out) and choose the 1400x900 refresh.
Note that the higher the resolution, the lower the vertical refresh rate your display (even a LCD) will support.
As its a widescreen LCD, you may need the reduced blanking option.
Your modeline Code: | # ModeLine "1440x900" 96.2 1440 1504 1536 1760 900 903 906 912 | decodes as run the pixel clock at 96.2MHz and use 1760 pixel times on every line, thats a total of 18.29uS per line, then draw each fram using a total of 912 lines, for a frame time of 16.685 mS or a vertical refresh rate of 59.933Hz.
It follows that if you want that modeline to work, it can only work with VertRefresh not specified, so Xorg can decide what to do, or a VertRefresh setting that allows 60Hz operation _________________ Regards,

Sorry, but it does not make very much sense. In LCD monitors each pixel is a separate physical device, and whatever you do, you have 1280x800 of them.
The display has to take a digital input from your video card and translate what the card gives into 1280x800 pixel picture. But at the end it is still 1280x800 small devices on your screen which are either lit or not.
In effect, you are trying to use higher resolution just to cheat your desktop software into creating smaller icons and fonts. Instead you should use desktop settings to achieve this effect. The size of text can be varied with quite a fine step. For example, in KDE I can set a width of my panel with the step of one pixel. Admittingly, the icon sizes are perhaps not so fine grained, but most of the desktop environments have a choice of small medium and large icon sets. For example, again in KDE,
KDE desktop has a choice of 16, 24, 32, 64, 128 pixel size icons. Normal is 32, and 16 are pretty small |

i have nothing to say more than .. you`re right .. ..
when you put it that way .. better solution would indeed be to change the kde`s settings than to achieve bigger resolution ..
i`ll just post the last results of trying to run X in 1440x900

playahater,
There is no sign in any of your logs that Xorg ever considered your 1440x900.
As others have said, its not possible to run an LCD above it native resolution. Thats the point where one pixel in the pixel bufer is mapped to one pixel on the LCD. An LCD is a digital device. Trying to draw one pixel buffer pixel in less than a LCD pixel just doesn't work. The LCD cannot perform the same sort of averaging that a CRT (analogue) can, and display what looks like a poorly focused image. _________________ Regards,

Leaving the issue of native LCD resolution aside
In the first xorg.conf you had
Modeline "1440x900" 71.00 1280 1328 1360 1440 800 803 809 823 -hsync -vsync
# ModeLine "1440x900" 96.2 1440 1504 1536 1760 900 903 906 912
Calling mode "1440x900" does not make it "1440x900" Notice 1280 and 800 in the mode description - it is nice and dandy 1280x800 mode
The commented out mode is 1440x900 one.
In the second xorg.conf I see both your custom modes are commented out. Where do you want to get 1440x900 from ?
It is in the other numbers on the line where (among other things) refresh frequency is encoded. If you want non-standard one, you have to recalculate all these numbers
for your monitor. |

I went through these issues with my new work computer. I don't think 1440x900 is a selectable resolution for the intel graphics chips with current drivers. You will have to try and just select a different resolution and not take full advantage of your LCD. We fooled around with this for a couple days before throwing a leftover 5-year old ATI card in my system to get the LCD's native resolution. Since you have a laptop, you're kind of screwed. |

well .. first of all .. as i have already said .. i`ll leave it at 1280x800 .. .. the picture is the best in that resolusion anyway ( i have learned something )..

well .. as i have understood from man, you can set resolution settings only in Screen section and that`s it. Things should work.

It is in the other numbers on the line where (among other things) refresh frequency is encoded. If you want non-standard one, you have to recalculate all these numbers
for your monitor.

i wanted this to ask for a couple of days, but didn`t know how . Can you, please, give me a link or something in order to see how is that done.
Is there any script which could calculate that or .. ?

playahater,
Xorg comes preprogrammed with the VESA Standard display resolutions. They are all 4:3 and of little interest to users wanting to use all of their wide screen displays. I believe they the latest version of Xorg has some preprogrammed wide screen modes too.
Xorg can generate arbitary screen resolutions but you have to tell it how, with a modeline
To see what all those numbers mean in your modeline, read or at least, the modes section. If you don't understand some CRT video terms, it won,t mean a lot, so here is a thumbnail sketch based on your real 1440x900 modeline.
Code: | ModeLine "1440x900" 96.2 1440 1504 1536 1760 900 903 906 912 |
The word ModeLine tells Xorg that we are defining an operating mode for the xserver. We are calling it "1440x900". In common with everything else in xorg.conf, every definition has a name (Identifier in X speak). Xorg uses the identifiers in all the various sections of xorg.conf to configure the server the way you want. It means you can have unused sections in the xorg.conf and Xorg will still work.
The 96.2 is the frequency that Xorg is to operate the pixel clock at (in MHz). Everything else is counted from this clock.
The numbers 1440 1504 1536 1760 define the timings for each video line. Thats 1440 active pixels on the screen, start the horizontal syncronisation pulse at pixel 1504, stop it at pixel 1536 and plot a total of 1760 pixels on a line.
Thats 1440 pixels on the screen for you and 320 pixels off the screen for the system. They are needed by CRT displays to return the electron beam to the left hand side of the screen for the start of the next line. Having described to Xorg how to draw a line on the screen, the frame is defined in terms of lines.
The numbers 900 903 906 912 are counts of lines.
Thats 900 lines on the screen for you, start the frame sync pulse at line 903 stop it at line 906 and draw a total of 912 lines in every frame. Thats 900 lines for you and 12 lines off the screen for the system. They are needed by CRT displays to return the electron beam to the top of the display ready to draw the first line in the next frame.
I did the arithmetic in an earlier post to show that this modeline gives you a refresh rate of 60Hz. _________________ Regards,

To add to NeddySeagoon
Manufacturers of wide screen LCD often add a custom made mode which corresponds just to that monitor, to the list of VESA standards.
It is practically always 60 Hz refresh native resolution mode.
For a standalone LCD, video driver queries the monitor for the list of supported modes, and this way gets access to the custom ones.
Same is for laptop, except I'm not sure where custom modes live - maybe in video card firmware.
In addition you can describe your one modes via Modeline in xorg.conf. So mode list available to X server consists of
VESA standards, manufacturers custom ones and your own via Modeline.
Xserver on launch checks them all, trims the list eliminating inappropriate, and selects the one most close to the request in 'Display' section. |
