X crashes everything except last used program

So this is a really strange problem, which I have on two different computers. At this point I am unable to remember when it started to happen, but this is what happens...

The entire desktop freezes except the last used window. I can keep on working in my last used window, but my mouse cannot click anymore. In the attached screenshot you can see the mouse over effect, however the mouse hasn't been at that position in some time.
I am able to either ctrl alt delete and X restarts or I can hit ctrl alt f1 and I am in my terminal.

After the freeze, does Xorg.0.log contain anything interesting?
How long can you run X before it freezes?

nothing in ANY log files ... hmmm.... can't really say maybe 5-10 minutes in.
