Hi, dhcpcd brings me a proper ip address, and ifconfig verifies that it is correct, but either ping or portage can contact the internet. This is a barebone system so i havn't install any applications except what the handbook suggested. I have no idea what to do. Any help avalible?

First check to see that you can ping the router, and also print the routing table using:
Code:
# route -n

And post it up here.

I had added "nodns" to my /etc/conf.d/net file, and my /etc/resolv.conf was messed up. i removed nodns, rebooted, and my problem was corrected.
