Am trying to install 2007.0 on a Dell Inspiron 8600 notebook. I'm having trouble getting an IP address with DHCP. Network card is a broadcom 4400 ethernet, and also a broadcom 4300 wireless. No wireless is available, so am using trying to use ethernet.

Booted the 2007.0 LiveCD, tried
Code:
dhcpcd -d eth1
. This results in
Code:
Error, timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response

btw, eth1 is my ethernet. eth0 is wireless, and eth2 is firewire.

After searching, and reading several threads, I've tried
Code:
lsmod | grep b44
and it shows that the b44 module is loaded. Then I try
Code:
modprobe b44
then I repeated:
Code:
dhcpcd -d eth1

I've also tried bringing eth1 down and up again with
Code:
ifconfig eth1 down
and
Code:
ifconfig eth1 up

Still, all I get is
Code:
Error, timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response
.

I've read that sometimes the broadcom takes a while to get an IP so I tried:
Code:
dhcpcd -t 60 eth1
to allow up to 60 seconds but still get the same error.

I am at a loss now. I have no idea what else to try. Can someone help me, so I can install gentoo on my notebook?

Thanks.

are u shure there is a dhcp running? have u got another os running? (win, mac os x). take a look there what the ip, netmask, default gateway and dns server, that modify them in linux

just to be sure that eth1 is really ur wired, pls:
ifconfig -a
iwconfig

tnx

As far as I can tell, dhcp is running. No, I don't have any other OS on the notebook. I've tried taking the subnet mask, gateway, and DNS info from a WinXP notebook that I use, but that didn't help either.

When I run
Code:
net-setup
it says eth0 is is broadcom 43xx a/b/g wireless, eth1 is broadcom 44xx 10/100 T and eth2 is 1394 firewire ethernet.

I select eth1, and it shows the name, MAC address, device driver: b44 and asks is this the device I want to configure. I select Yes, then it asks if the device is wireless or wired. I choose wired, and it says run
Code:
ifconfig
to verify that everything is working. I run
Code:
ifconfig
and it shows that eth1 is up, but no IP address.

Hello.

That is strange, googling a bit I found people who succesfully installed Gentoo 2005.1 in your notebook.

Did you try booting with gentoo nox option at startup, or with the minimal cd, to see if something changes?

No, I haven't tried that. when I use the LiveCD, I use
Code:
gentoo dopcmcia

Also, I've tried using a Ubuntu 7.10 install disc, and I can't get an IP using DHCP there either. I've set the DNS server info, Subnet, etc, but it doesn't work. I've taken the notebook to another friends' house, and I get an IP just fine, and can go online. Wierd.
