Use the Gentoo LiveCD and chroot into your existing linux partition and then emerge your pcmcia drivers.

The drivers should come on the boot cd, because emerge doesnt start working until after you have bootstrapped the pc if I understand things correctly. Does your NIC work whenever you boot the liveCD?

Are the modules getting loaded whenever you boot or can you load them by hand?

You can type lsmod. This will list all modules that are loaded. You can cd into /lib/modules/kernel_name/ and dig through there and modprobe module_name and that should load the drivers for you.
