I'm running the latest Gentoo sources (2.6.22-r8) and for some reason Doom 3 will not run. I'm using nVidia drivers/card and Doom3 has worked with this setup before on an earlier kernel/configuration. Below is output from running Doom 3 from the terminal:

tylerm@gentoo_sulaco ~ $ doom3

Segfault could mean anything in general. Most common would be faulty hardware - especially memory. Then may be faulty/corrupted libraries.

In your case, direct rendering is not enabled. So better check on that first. (try re-emerging nvidia drivers and do "eselect opengl set nvidia" and run "ldconfig".) Also, which nvidia-driver version are you running and on which card ? (remember that the latest mainstream driver supports gpu's only from geforce fx (5) series onwards. So you may want legacy drivers in that case.)

Ok, I see its a quadro fx 1000 gpu (not much idea about those ;)). About permissions to /dev/nvidiactl, I guess try running the game as root and also, try upgrading to latest drivers because of security issues with /dev/nvidia* files (100.14.23 was released today ;)).

The game will not run as root. I updated to the latest drivers .23... I've got the following enabled:

nvidia-xconfig --composite
nvidia-xconfig --allow-glx-with-composite
nvidia-xconfig --render-accel
nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals

Still no go. Strange!

Do you see "direct rendering: Yes" in the output of "glxinfo" ?. Can you back up your /etx/X11/xorg.conf and use this xorg.conf :
http://137.110.115.18/gentoo/neon-src/extrapacks/system/xconf/etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia

Do you use nvidia-drivers from portage or manually install them ?

I've got a yes for direct rendering. I manually installed the latest .23 drivers. I'll try out that .conf file.

That's a no-go with that .conf file also.

But you get these messages :
Quote:
NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (Permission denied).
NVIDIA: Direct rendering failed; attempting indirect rendering.

May be you can google around that. Example, look at the thread in nvnews forums :
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=89965

In short, hopefully you have the line :
Quote:
options nvidia NVreg_DeviceFileMode=432 NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=27 NVreg_ModifyDeviceFiles=1

in your /etc/modules.d/nvidia (if not, after adding that, do run "update-modules" and reload nvidia module). And also hoping you have the line
Quote:
KERNEL=="nvidia*", NAME="%k", GROUP="video"

in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules.

PS : Can you run any opengl application? Say "glxgears" ?

glxgears runs fine as well as gl screensavers. I'll do a little googling and see what I can find.

Strange ;). Btw, hope the user is in video (and games) group. Try fiddling with the permissions of /dev/nvidiactl (try with 777, which is most insecure btw ;)).

Shoot man.... all this and it turns out I was not in the freaking video group after all. Stupid!!! Thanks for the help though... it's now running fine.
