X11 hanging on exit

I'm new to gentoo, and just fired up gnome for the first time. On user logout from gnome, or actually any time X stops, I get only a blank screen indefinitely. I have to use ctrl-alt-del because even ctrl-alt-f[1..7] doesn't work. Either they went blank as well, or the computer doesn't respond to the key stroke.

I've heard of a similar problem with ATI 3D cards, but I'm on nVidia. xorg.conf is configured mostly from autoconfigure, and the rest from the gentoo xorg-x11 howto page.

Has anybody seen this?

I don't think this is the same problem as the one being reported by people claiming that X locks up with firefox and/or thunderbird. My problem occurs when and only when i close X...
