Hi everyone!!!

At last... I've got a decent computer and it has been a few days since I installed Gentoo... I'm willing to try Compiz-Fusion and I just found out that yesterday they released the first stable version (0.6.0). I have a GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB video card and an ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard.

I was hoping someone could help me install the new Compiz Fusion 0.6.0. I know I can install the old version through Xeffects, and honestly... I haven't tried it yet. Do you know when is the new versions going to be available in the portage? (at least through Xeffexts). Thanks

Update [Sources] (Compiz 0.6.2 Already available in portage):

I hadn't noticed that the compiz package in portage was Compiz Fusion... but since it's the same version... I guess I'll just..... emerge compiz :|

OK OK...

The "compiz" package available in the portage is not Compiz Fusion.... yes, it is Compiz 0.6.2 and the links I provided where for Compiz not Compiz Fusion.

Here is the official announcement:
http://lists.compiz-fusion.org/pipermail/community/2007-October/000142.html

Source Code for Compiz Fusion 0.6.0 (not Compiz):

This is a stable release of Compiz Fusion... why are Gentoo not adding it to portage?

On bugs.gentoo.org there are a few bugs, but they haven't changed in a while:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189056
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189948
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189881

Can I ask please what's going on?

Thanks,

Erlend

I think this is absolutely not understandable as portages' Compiz IS Compiz-Fusion right now, so I think "Desktop Environments" is the place to be for this question.

I don't get why these haven't been moved over. I guess lack of maintainer? but xeffects severed it's ties to gentoo :-/

i don't understand why compiz-fusion isn't in Portage's main tree either. It has had a full rc release and now a full stable release... there isn't much more needed to hit the entry point into portage.

we have compiz... but not compiz-fusion. so we have jack squat. just nonsensical.

there are serious issues using xeffects in whole, modified gtk+ modified qt, etc, etc, etc. it'd be nice to have this in portage so we can maintain a more consistent tree. it'd be nice to not have to use an overlay for STABLE SOFTWARE.

Hmm....

=-=-=

emerge --sync
emerge portage
emerge -p compiz-fusion

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] x11-wm/compiz-0.6.2 USE="-dbus -debug -gnome -kde -svg"
[ebuild N ] x11-libs/compiz-bcop-0.6.0
[ebuild U ] x11-themes/emerald-themes-0.5.2 [0.2.1]
[ebuild N ] x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.6.0
[ebuild N ] x11-libs/libcompizconfig-0.6.0
[ebuild N ] dev-python/compizconfig-python-0.6.0.1

[ebuild N ] x11-apps/ccsm-0.6.0
[ebuild N ] x11-wm/compiz-fusion-0.6.0 USE="-gnome -kde"

Is it just me or does it look like this got added?

Yeah, I just synced and I have it available now, and I'm not using any related overlays.

See?
If you whine about it enough the devs do take notice.

I don't think I'd phrase this like you did but yes, it very exciting to not have to use xeffects anymore.

[edit] i spoke to soon... :(
Code:
KEYWORDS="~x86"

this has been working since day one just fine on my amd64. gentoo devs WAKE THE HELL UP.

Isn't it standard to only keyword a new package ~x86, and let the arch teams deal with adding the other keywords?

Just give them a little more time (after all, you've waited this long).

compiles fine here on amd64 with package.keywords set to **. I'm sure someone will jump in and give concrete examples against what I'm about to say but after using the amd64 ARCH for years; if it's good enough for ~x86 it's good enough for ~amd64. look at the convergence work on the kernel merging i386 and x86_64 into a single x86. (obviously different programming levels). most is needless separation but that is a very different topic.

That's usually true. In fact, I always always accept the (~)x86 keyword on an amd64 installation. As always, do it at your own risk, You gotta keep the pieces when something -rarely- breaks because of this.

Hi, i install like a month ago, compiz-fusion following the wiki, using layman overlay,
and today i saw in the compiz website the release of the new version, and i want to update my overlay using layman
but i get the following error:
Code:

$ layman -a xeffects
* Running command "/usr/bin/svn co "svn://svn.gentoo-xeffects.org/xeffects/trunk/" "/usr/layman/xeffects""...
svn: Can't connect to host 'svn.gentoo-xeffects.org': Connection refused
* Failed to add overlay "xeffects".
* Error was: Adding the overlay failed!

I think is down or something.
Doing my normal day emerge --sync and emerge -up world i saw compiz-fusion 0.6 OMG!
BUT i need to put other packages in order to emerge, this is my package.keywords file:
Code:

dev-python/compizconfig-python
x11-wm/compiz
x11-wm/compiz-fusion
x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-main
x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-extra
x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported
x11-wm/emerald
x11-themes/emerald-themes
x11-apps/ccsm
x11-libs/libcompizconfig
x11-libs/compizconfig-backend-gconf
x11-libs/compizconfig-backend-kconfig
x11-libs/compiz-bcop
x11-apps/fusion-icon **
=gnome-extra/avant-window-navigator-9999 **
x11-plugins/compiz-extra
x11-apps/compiz-settings **

app-portage/layman

x11-libs/libwnck
x11-libs/gtk+ **
dev-libs/glib **
x11-libs/pango **

as you can saw i need to add the 4 last ones in order to do an emerge -u compiz-fusion, i dont know if this cause me troubles cuz "gtk+ glib and pango" are important libs. :? :?: :?:

Yeah, yesterday I emerged compiz-fusion and I didn't need those.
Today, at an emerge -uNDav world, it complains that compiz-0.6.2 wants a newer libwnck which in turns wants a newer gtk+... at this point I removed compiz.
So please, can the man/woman who changed the compiz ebuild to revert it back to yesterday state? It was so nice, while it lasted ;)

I followed this how-to a while back and it worked perfectly. However, I'm having issues updating to the latest version in portage. Any ideas on how to fix it? I've tried masking as the message suggestions, but I don't think that's the problem.

Code:

# emerge compiz-fusion -Dup

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies -
!!! Multiple versions within a single package slot have been
!!! pulled into the dependency graph:

('ebuild', '/', 'x11-wm/compiz-0.5.2', 'merge') pulled in by
  ('installed', '/', 'x11-wm/emerald-0.5.2', 'nomerge')

('installed', '/', 'x11-wm/compiz-0.6.2', 'nomerge') pulled in by
  ('ebuild', '/', 'x11-libs/compizconfig-backend-gconf-0.6.0', 'merge')
  ('ebuild', '/', 'x11-libs/libcompizconfig-0.6.0', 'merge')
  ('ebuild', '/', 'x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.6.0', 'merge')

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in the
dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can not be
installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page
or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

First, try to sync and emerge portage. If it didn't solve, unmerge compiz before emerge compiz-fusion. Anyway, why would you use compiz alone when you have "fusion" version? :D

I've had problems with beryl when I installed compiz-fusion and had to unmerge some packages until it works.

If compiz-fusion was the only reason you used the xeffects overlay, then you all should probably remove it and rebuild the packages you used from the overlay to get back in sync with the official portage tree.

Yes, I used the xeffects overlay just to get compiz-fusion. And now I want to remove it just as you said. But how do I do it? Remove the overlay in make.conf?

Here's what I get when I unmerged compiz and tried to emerge compiz-fusion...
Code:
