Hi all!!
I'm interested on Gentoo/FreeBSD.. I just have a few questions...
Following the howto I have seen that portage tree is the same for FreeBSD... Most Linux apps should compile for FreeBSD. But... What will happen when I try to compile a Linux app, like... enemy territory (just an example).. ET don't have a BSD version.. Will portage broke down or will it emulate the binary automatically??
Is it stable enought?? Has anyone tried it? (for desktop)
cheers ![Smile :)](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Heya,
I've just tried G/FBSD for a short while in a vmware, just because I love the idea about it (spreading gentoo philosophy outside of the linux world). Unfortunately it is still at a very early stage and I experienced loads of odd errors while trying to get some basics going (not even a DE). Currently a large part of the portage tree is available for the ~x86-fbsd arch, but probably most them have not even been tested to compile. I wouldn't advice you to use it for anything but testing at this stage, and you will probably need thorough freebsd knowledge to even get things going.
Hope this helps, _________________ Gigabyte G33-DS3R, E6850, 4gb ddr2-800, 8800GT, Acer AL2623W - amd64

Gentoo/FreeBSD is very usable as a desktop, many desktop applications have been keyworded. As for linux compatibility, you would need to enable that in the kernel (as you would for FreeBSD proper), but I have no clue if that would allow you to run games.
The best place to ask questions is #gentoo-bsd, there are generally some devs hanging out in there. _________________ www.gentoo.org.au || #gentoo-au |

It definitely does, I'm running OpenArena, NWN or UT2004 just as fine as in Linux (in plain FBSD though, but I guess it would be the same in Gentoo). _________________ Easiest way never leads anywhere... |
