hello gentoo users!
i've problems with my nic on my hp omnibook laptop. it's a 8139 realtek chip. nothing special. there is a dhcp client running as well.
after my gentoo install (everything worked fine) i restarted the system and tried to emerge kde. but after a while the download process of a packet was stuck and after a ctrl-c i tried ifconfig and there was no eth0 anymore. i have to add that at that time the laptop was very hot.
i retried after some time and it worked again, but next time it didn't and so on. at the beginning there is a eth0 but without ip address and after a while it vanishes completely (ifconfig). i have to reboot the system in order to get the nic working.
now my question is what kind of error this could be. to me it seems more like a hw problem. or is it possible that it has to do with the dhcp or the nic module or acpi? any suggestions appreciated! thank you, georg |

no, it isn't. at the moment it works fine. not on every start it behaves like this. next time it runs i'll check it.
but there's a thing i'm worried about. the fan always remains on the lowest level even if i compile kde... shouldn't be like this, especially because it's quite warm here...
do you know if it has something to do with acpi?

My mobo has an integrated 8139 ethernet device. Everything was detected when I booted from the CD, but eth0 would die when I ran ifconfig. Still haven't figured out why. _________________ nadams (at) ieee (dot) org |

ok, i've found now by my self the explanation: if you have configured eth0 as dhcp interface, it will be removed. i don't know why! but if you run dhcpcd as root it will appear again. |
