Hey, I have he Asus TV Tuner card, it uses the "Connexant CX23880". I'm very new to using Linux as a desktop OS so please bare with me. I'm not sure where to start. I have audio support so thats already worked out, now I've been told I need to use Video For Linux 2. What is that? Is it a program or a kernel patch. I have digital cable hooked up to the card by the S-VIDEO input so I don't need to be able to change the channels through it, just display the audio / video. _________________ -=mUnky=-

Video4Linux is creatable through kernel compilation.
cd /usr/src/[kernel dir]
make menuconfig
Look in Multimedia>Select Video For Linux
I havn't done this in forever so you'll need to make sure there aren't some other options you need but they would be floating around in the Video For Linux directory under Multimedia. Once your done selecting all the options you need...
make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install
cp /usr/src/[kernel dir]/System.map /boot
cp /usr/src/[kernel dir]/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot
lilo -v (If you use lilo, not grub)
Just make sure when you copy those two files that your not overwriting a kernel other than the one your working on because a system is capable of having multiple kernels. Once you reboot into your new kernel you SHOULD have /dev/video0 or /dev/v4l/video0. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong or forgetting something. |

Thanks for the help I'll try that when I get home.
1) Does that support my card without any module addons?
2) How do I view the TV? _________________ -=mUnky=-

While video4linux is the base for all grabber/tuner things, your conexant chip is not yet fully supported in linux.
It's fairly new, therefore drivers are very alpha.
see : http://bytesex.org/cx88 for more details.
I tried the drivers, image quality is next to useless, but it's actively developped, so it's just a matter of time.
in the meantime, i bought a cheap bt878 card for 30 bucks that works marvelously well under linux.
hope it helps.
cheers
[edit] to watch tv, you need an app that will talk to the v4l drivers. imho the best/most practical is XAWTV [/edit] |
