|
|
I build a computer for mediacenter with compiz.
I install geforce 2 agp 64mb video card now
I want to upgrade it to some newer nvidia card (geforce 4 or higher) in the near future
If I install the nvidia closed drivers will I need to do anything when changing the card or just swap it and boot up (add line in xorg at most) ?
Will I need to mess up with the nvidia driver ?
If I change to a card with tv out or a dual head will I need to change anything (except xorg.conf) for the extra feature to work ?
What flags should I set or avoid ? (related to this point only) |

I don't think you need to change anything.
I once had a computer with Geforce4 MX 440 and I replaced it with GeForce 6600GT without any problems. All I did was re-emerge nvidia-drivers. _________________ “And even in authoritarian countries, information networks are helping people discover new facts and making governments more accountable.”– Hillary Clinton, Jan. 21, 2010 |

Why do I need to emerge the drivers ?
Is there any loss in performance or other windows-like issues in re emergeing the (proprietary) driver ? |

Maybe it checks what video card you have to install the right module... I really don't know. It just seems like the proper thing to do...
Why wouldn't you want to do it? _________________ “And even in authoritarian countries, information networks are helping people discover new facts and making governments more accountable.”– Hillary Clinton, Jan. 21, 2010 |

Its kinda things i dont like to mess up with. I would expect it to make trouble (unlike open source stuff for which it seems to me omre natural to be 'emerged') |

If you have a Geforce2 GTS/PRO or oder nVidia card you have to use the 71.86.01 legacy drivers. If you have a Geforce2 MX - Geforce 4 video card then you can use the 96.43.01 drivers. If you replaced with the a Geforce FX video card or newer then you can use the latest 100 series driver. nVidia makes two legacy drivers, and one newer driver. If you replace your Geforce 2 card with something newer it will likely be with a FX series (5xxx) and will use the newest drivers. _________________ Hindi ko naintindihan, pakiulit.
